Job description

Overview

NHS Shetland invites applications for a full-time Porter / Maintenance Assistant position based in Lerwick, Scotland. This role involves responsibilities across both portering and estates services within NHS Shetland, requiring a full clean driving licence due to duties including delivery and collection tasks throughout Shetland. The working week is 36 hours, Band 2 salary is £26,696 to £28,988 annually with additional weekend and distant island allowances.

Portering Duties

The post holder will support the Portering Team to ensure efficient service operations by:

  • Transferring and escorting patients and visitors.
  • Transporting samples, medical records, meals, equipment, mail, and other items between wards.
  • Handling medical gases.
  • Managing vehicles, including movement checks and waste transportation.

Maintenance Assistance

This role also involves assisting with routine maintenance duties across all NHS Shetland properties. Candidates should demonstrate an interest or experience in maintenance along with the ability to work independently using initiative.

Candidate Profile

  • Strong communication skills and ability to work flexibly under pressure.
  • Good general education with computer literacy.
  • A strong work ethic and pride in the quality of work.
  • Ability to work independently and effectively.
  • Must hold a current full driving licence without serious convictions.

Additional Information

  • Applicants may occasionally cover night shifts on short notice during annual leave or sickness periods.
  • Initial training and induction provided, with ongoing peer support until full competency achieved.
