Performance Test Engineer

Job Overview

We seek a skilled Performance Test Engineer to architect, execute, and evaluate performance and load testing for applications and APIs. This role demands hands-on expertise in performance and API testing, along with the ability to devise thorough test plans and strategies.

Key Responsibilities

• Create detailed Performance Test Plans covering objectives, scope, workload models, scenarios, entry/exit criteria, environments, test data, risks, and reporting requirements.
• Establish and implement performance testing strategies aligned with application architecture and business needs.
• Design and run various performance tests including load, stress, spike, endurance/soak, and scalability assessments.
• Develop test scripts and scenarios for web applications and RESTful API services.
• Conduct API performance evaluations focusing on response times, throughput, concurrent users, error rates, and system behavior under stress.
• Set performance baselines and determine suitable benchmarks and acceptance thresholds.
• Analyze test results to detect bottlenecks in applications, APIs, databases, infrastructure, or networks.
• Generate comprehensive performance reports highlighting findings, trends, analyses, and improvement recommendations.
• Collaborate effectively with developers, QA, DevOps, architects, and infrastructure teams to resolve performance concerns.
• Support performance testing activities across multiple environments and software releases.
• Integrate performance testing within CI/CD pipelines when applicable.
• Maintain and update performance testing artifacts including documentation, scripts, test data, and execution results.
• Advise on performance optimizations, scalability enhancements, and capacity planning.

Required Qualifications

• Minimum three years of applied experience in performance testing or engineering.
• Proven expertise in API functional and performance testing.
• Experience formulating Performance Test Plans and Strategies.
• Ability to define workload models, test objectives, performance scenarios, acceptance criteria, and key performance indicators.
• Familiarity with performance testing tools such as SmartBear LoadNinja, LoadUI, or equivalents.
• Sound knowledge of REST APIs, HTTP/HTTPS protocols, JSON, XML, and API authentication mechanisms.
• Experience with various performance testing types: load, stress, spike, endurance/soak, scalability, and capacity assessments.
• Competence in analyzing metrics like response times, throughput, concurrency, error rates, CPU/memory usage, database, and network utilization.
• Working experience with SQL and conducting database performance reviews.
• Understanding of Agile and Scrum software development methodologies.
• Strong analytical, problem-solving, communication, and documentation skills.

Preferred Skills

• Hands-on use of SmartBear tools.
• Experience with JMeter, LoadRunner, Gatling, k6, or other performance testing platforms.
• Experience integrating performance tests into continuous integration/continuous delivery workflows.
• Knowledge of cloud services such as AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud Platform.
• Experience with application performance monitoring tools like Dynatrace, AppDynamics, or New Relic.
• Familiarity with containerization/orchestration tools like Docker and Kubernetes and distributed systems.
• Skills in capacity planning and analyzing production performance.

Candidate Profile

The ideal candidate will independently manage the full lifecycle of performance testing—from requirements gathering, planning, and strategy development, through workload and API test design, execution, result analysis, bottleneck identification, and delivering actionable recommendations to both technical teams and business stakeholders. Experience with SmartBear is a strong asset; however, candidates with equivalent performance and API testing capabilities using other tools will be considered.
