Overview
The Patient Care Assistant plays a crucial role in delivering compassionate and comprehensive care, supporting both patients and healthcare providers to maintain an effective and positive care environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Ensure that clinics or procedure rooms are fully stocked and prepared with all required instruments, devices, and supplies for patient care readiness.
- Carry out thorough assessments of patients by checking vital signs, medical histories, fall risk, and infectious disease symptoms, documenting findings precisely and applying safety measures as needed.
- Assist physicians during examinations and clinical procedures, prioritizing patient comfort and ensuring their safety.
- Organize follow-up appointments, specialist referrals, and diagnostic tests to maintain smooth continuity of patient care.
- Supervise medical supplies and equipment in the outpatient department, ensuring availability and efficient use, including verifying payment for services prior to procedures.
- Accurately measure and record vital signs such as temperature, pulse, respiration rate, pain level, oxygen saturation, blood pressure, and anthropometric data.
- Maintain detailed patient records and care documentation in accordance with organizational standards.
- Collaborate closely with nurses, doctors, and healthcare team members to coordinate patient care plans.
- Perform simple dressing changes while adhering to infection control standards.
- Administer topical medications and eye drops carefully, ensuring patient comfort and safety.
- Conduct point-of-care diagnostic tests as per established protocols.
- Ensure accurate billing for services and track usage against inventory levels.
- Monitor supply stock levels and medication expiration dates, prompting timely replenishment requests to the Nurse Manager when needed.
- Respond appropriately to urgent or unexpected situations within routine responsibilities to ensure patient safety.
- Report defective equipment, maintenance issues, or safety hazards to relevant personnel promptly.
- Provide coverage in different units as directed by the Charge Nurse or Nurse Manager based on competency and availability.
- Work rotating shifts including weekends, holidays, and be available on-call to meet departmental needs.
- Engage in ongoing professional development to enhance clinical knowledge and skills.
- Protect patient confidentiality rigorously, maintaining privacy of sensitive information.
- Assist patients with mobility, including transfers between beds, chairs, and use of mobility aids.
- Report incidents or safety concerns and support follow-up actions to maintain a safe healthcare environment.
Continuous Improvement Responsibilities
- Perform all tasks in alignment with the organization’s person-centered care values.
- Contribute proactively to continuous improvement initiatives within the scope of the role.
- Adhere strictly to safety protocols, identifying and addressing job-related safety issues promptly.
- Maintain confidentiality of all sensitive or accessed information during work.
- Comply with cybersecurity policies to safeguard systems and participate in related awareness training.
- Uphold the organization’s code of conduct, policies, and ethical standards.
- Complete mandatory educational requirements on schedule, at least one month prior to expiration.
Qualifications and Requirements
- Demonstrate accuracy and the capacity to work effectively under stress and pressure.
- Show initiative and an ability to collaborate effectively within team settings.
- Adaptability to change and evolving technologies is essential.
- Minimum of one year of experience as a Patient Care Assistant is required; fresh graduates may enter via a transition to practice program.
- Completed formal training or diploma in Patient Care Assistance, Nursing, or related field.
- Fluency in both spoken and written English is mandatory; Arabic language skills are advantageous.
- Possession of licenses including country of origin healthcare license, regional practice license (e.g., SCFHS, DHA), Basic Life Support (BLS), Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), and other relevant life support training courses.
