About Lumilens
Lumilens is pioneering fundamental photonics technologies essential for the next-generation AI supercomputing landscape. Our innovations range from chip-to-chip optical interconnects to scalable photonic engines, enabling computing that is significantly faster, more efficient, and cooler. As a financially supported startup with backing from Mayfield and founded by industry veterans, we're focused on reimagining the optical layer starting from silicon. Our team of elite engineers tackles complex challenges in optics, systems, and scalability to build the infrastructure of the future.
Role Overview
We are seeking an Optical Design Engineer to lead the design and validation of coupling optics that facilitate delivering optical signals up to 1.6 Tb/s into client networks. This role demands expertise in optical system design and hands-on laboratory experience to ensure optimal signal transmission performance.
Key Responsibilities
- Apply raytracing software such as Zemax to simulate and design lens and fiber-based coupling solutions tailored to Silicon Photonics electro-optical components.
- Collaborate with suppliers by offering expert advice on optical design concepts to enhance the performance of optical transceivers.
- Devise and execute experiments aimed at assessing optical coupling solution effectiveness.
- Support mechanical designers and process engineers technically to achieve peak performance within realistic manufacturing parameters.
Qualifications & Skills
- Possess a Master's degree in optical engineering or a similarly relevant field; a Ph.D. is highly desirable.
- A minimum of two years' direct experience in optical system design.
- Demonstrated proficiency with raytracing tools including Zemax or CodeV (covering sequential/non-sequential raytracing, tolerancing, Monte Carlo simulations, and ZOS-API scripting).
- Experience with MATLAB or Python programming.
- Knowledge of JMP is advantageous.
- Practical lab experience conducting optical testing and designing setups.
- Familiarity with process control, quality assurance, and optical communication standards (such as IEEE and MSA) is a plus.
- Strong analytical and creative problem-solving abilities applied to complex technical challenges.
- Proven ability to collaborate effectively with international teams across different time zones.
- A self-starter mindset, capable of managing multiple tasks and meeting deadlines independently.
- Organized and detail-oriented with adaptive strategies to overcome obstacles.
- Excellent communication skills.
- Availability and willingness to travel approximately 20% of the time.
Additional Experience
- Exposure to photonics, telecommunications, or high-speed networking systems is beneficial.
What Lumilens Offers
- Competitive salary aligned with experience.
- A comprehensive benefits plan including health insurance coverage.
- Opportunities for professional growth and certification.
- Access to state-of-the-art optical and photonics test facilities and equipment.
- A collaborative work environment with diverse, cross-functional teams dedicated to tackling advanced photonics problems.
- Commitment to equal opportunity employment regardless of protected status categories.
