Job description
Job Overview
The Operating Theatre Technician plays a vital role in ensuring a safe and sterile environment for surgical patients during their procedures.
Key Responsibilities
- Inspect suction and diathermy machines to ensure cleanliness and proper functionality.
- Verify the clarity and operation of operating lights.
- Clean and prepare the operating table along with its accessories.
- Set up the operating room in readiness for each scheduled patient.
- Assist patients safely during transfers between the trolley and operating table, including positioning.
- Support surgeons with tasks such as applying the tourniquet.
- Adjust and focus operating lights and collaborate with nursing staff to ensure patient care.
- Conduct daily inventory checks of positioning aids and accessories.
- Perform cleaning of the operating theatre between cases, ensuring completion within 15 minutes.
- Dispose of soiled linen and surgical waste appropriately after cases have started or when feasible.
- Ensure suction liners are properly sealed before disposal in biohazard bags.
- Maintain orderly housekeeping of all areas in the theatre suite including the operating room, prep-room, scrub room, anaesthesia room, and sluice room on a daily basis.
- Carry out terminal cleaning at the end of operating lists or following infected cases, complying with protocols.
- Remain in the operating room to assist with ad-hoc needs such as changing suction liners or providing additional equipment.
Additional Duties
- Oversee the cleanliness and maintenance of the pantry area.
- Transport patients between wards and the operating theatre as required.
- Perform routine weekly cleaning of OT equipment such as tourniquets and light sources.
- Undertake any other responsibilities as assigned.
Qualifications and Skills
- Possession of WSQ Higher Certificate in Healthcare Support (Operating Theatre Support) or equivalent relevant experience as an Operating Theatre Technician.
- Demonstrated initiative and eagerness to learn on the job.
- Good communication and interpersonal skills to effectively collaborate with medical teams and patients.
