Job description
Position Overview
The Senior Occupational Therapist plays a pivotal role in managing a specialized team within occupational therapy and delivering expert assessments and treatments for patients referred for occupational therapy services. This position involves supervising occupational therapists at AH11/12 levels and therapy assistants within the team.
Primary Duties
- Conduct independent patient assessments and manage therapy plans using specialized occupational therapy expertise.
- Communicate findings and progress reports to referring physicians and members of the medical team.
- Maintain precise and compliant occupational therapy documentation and patient records.
- Ensure accurate billing and charging procedures are followed.
- Record and update monthly individual performance statistics.
- Adhere strictly to clinical governance and service quality standards.
- Operate within scope of professional competence while consulting supervisors or healthcare colleagues when necessary.
Secondary Responsibilities
Clinical Contributions
- Work collaboratively with multidisciplinary healthcare teams and support occupational therapists' involvement in case conferences.
- Help review and revise clinical protocols and standard operating procedures aligned with the latest evidence-based practices.
- Participate in clinical education by assisting in organizing relevant programs for occupational therapy students.
- Support initiation and coordination of clinical research projects related to the workgroup.
Service and Operational Tasks
- Assist in preparing monthly workgroup performance reports covering clinical, service quality, revenue, and productivity metrics.
- Monitor and help manage key performance indicators within the workgroup.
- Keep updated inventory records for therapy equipment and coordinate its procurement.
- Assist with budgeting for therapeutic resources and contribute to yearly capital expenditure, asset, and operational budget planning.
- Support management of patient complaints, promote workplace safety, and prevent adverse events.
- Help in the development, promotion, and marketing of new clinical services.
Staff Development
- Facilitate onboarding and supervision of new occupational therapists assigned to the group, maintaining updated induction materials.
- Identify training needs, foster staff well-being, and contribute to team development initiatives.
- Lead or support department in-service training activities.
Additional Contributions
- Maintain continual professional development to enhance occupational therapy knowledge and skills.
- Contribute to hospital and external educational events such as talks, workshops, seminars, and forums.
- Build strategic networks with healthcare practitioners across Alexandra Hospital to enhance team collaboration and patient care quality.
- Support project management efforts assigned to the workgroup.
Qualifications and Skills
- Diploma or Degree in Occupational Therapy from an accredited institution.
- Postgraduate qualifications in relevant clinical specialties are advantageous.
- A minimum of three years relevant work experience with full AHPC registration preferred.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills are essential.
- Strong supervisory and coaching capabilities.
- Service-oriented mindset with a customer focus and results-driven approach.
- Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.
- Special interest in geriatrics, neurology, orthopedics (including hand therapy), and palliative care.
- Proficiency using Microsoft Office suite including Excel, Word, Access, and PowerPoint, alongside solid IT skills.
