Job Location
This role is stationed at HM Prison Berwyn in Wrexham, Wales (LL13 9QE).
Role Overview
The Mentor position is a non-operational role within the prison establishment. The primary responsibility involves supervising and guiding prisoners working in non-specialist workshops. The role does not require delivering qualifications or operating within specialist training areas. It includes overseeing workshop activities and prisoner management on a rotational basis.
Key Responsibilities
- Participate in prisoner selection for workshop placement.
- Conduct inductions focusing on areas such as health and safety, COSHH, and proper use of machinery and tools ensuring safety and security of materials and equipment.
- Provide individualized support to prisoners, adapting learning and work targets to their needs while managing quality standards and contractual obligations.
- Oversee prisoner behaviour, safety, motivation, discipline, and development during workshop tasks.
- Perform security checks such as metal detector scans or rub-down searches for prisoners entering or leaving workshops.
- Initiate reviews to develop products and diversify prisoner work experience.
- Contribute to risk and health & safety assessments related to workshop consumables and environments.
- Support prisoner reporting processes relating to parole, sentence planning, and incident reporting (including ACCT, VRIR, and SIRs).
- Maintain and update prisoner training records, approve attendance, and manage wage records, including piece work when applicable.
- Ensure communication via radio net follows Local Security Strategy protocols.
- Request and forecast material usage for workshop targets and maintain quality assurance aligned with specifications.
- Attend and contribute in relevant meetings and provide administrative support including documentation for verification and quality auditing.
Working Conditions
This position requires a 37-hour standard workweek with regular shifts outside the hours of 7:00 AM to 7:00 PM Monday to Friday, including evenings, nights, weekends, and public holidays. Unsocial hours payments are provided as per organizational policy.

Remuneration and Benefits
The annual salary is £29,107 with an additional employer pension contribution of £8,432 towards the Civil Service Defined Benefit Pension Scheme.
