This role operates across multiple locations: NMS Abbey Gardens Reading RG1 3BA, NPS James Glashier House Bracknell RG12 1BP, NPS Revelstoke House Slough SL1 2HF, and NPS St Clements House Basingstoke RG21 7SB.
Job Overview
The Community Payback Supervisor supports individuals on probation by leading and supervising unpaid community work projects. You will work hands-on with groups helping them complete various manual tasks that contribute positively to the community. Tasks may range from environmental maintenance such as litter picking and graffiti removal to restoration of community facilities and landscaping.
Working Hours and Schedule
The role requires a fixed daily schedule from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM, including weekend shifts. Candidates are expected to work both Saturdays and Sundays each week with agreed alternate weekdays. Due to the nature of the work, break times may differ from the standard pattern; however, wellbeing is a priority and supported accordingly.
Salary and Progression
The starting salary for part-time employees is £28,064 (pro-rata). Pay progression is possible annually through a Competency Based Framework (CBF), which allows increases based on demonstrated competence. Additionally, pay scales are aligned annually with Civil Service remuneration guidelines. Weekend work attracts a 50% higher pay rate.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct supervision of groups carrying out community payback unpaid work for up to seven hours daily.
- Lead and motivate teams to complete assigned manual tasks effectively and safely.
- Drive service vehicles to transport people, equipment, and supplies to work sites (requires full UK manual driving licence).
- Ensure all work is performed to quality standards, offering practical support and demonstration of skills as needed.
- Manage worksite safety and compliance with relevant guidelines.
Candidate Requirements
- Must possess a full UK manual driving licence (candidates with automatic only licences are not eligible).
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills suitable for supervising diverse groups.
- Proven leadership ability and confidence in motivating teams.
- Practical or trade skills are advantageous, especially in painting, decorating, carpentry, gardening, grounds maintenance, construction, landscaping, or general maintenance.
- Experience from varied backgrounds such as employment, armed forces, voluntary work, education, or community projects is valuable.
Additional Information
Interviews will be conducted in-person on Thursday 22nd or Wednesday 28th October at the Reading Office. These will include a full-day assessment with a morning site visit followed by an afternoon interview. Attendance for the whole day is mandatory as there are no alternative dates or rescheduling options.
The role involves supporting offenders to develop skills and work habits that aid rehabilitation while contributing positively to the community.
Immigration and Eligibility
Candidates must have the legal right to work in the UK civil service. This role does not sponsor new Skilled Worker visas post 22 July 2025, except for those continuously holding one prior to that date. Applicants should ensure they maintain the appropriate right to live and work in the UK.
