Job description

Overview of Our Team

The Sputter Equipment Development Engineering (SpEDE) group at Seagate is dedicated to designing and advancing next-generation sputtering process machinery that underpins worldwide HDD media manufacturing. Positioned at the convergence of mechanical design, vacuum technology, thermal management, automation, and process integration, this team converts conceptual ideas into fully validated systems implemented in Seagate's manufacturing facilities globally.

Operating within a global engineering framework, SpEDE collaborates intensively with research and development, manufacturing, and process engineering units to deliver equipment solutions that enhance performance, dependability, and scalable manufacturing efficiency.

This role places you in a highly cooperative engineering setting focused on solid fundamentals, proactive troubleshooting, and ongoing professional growth. You will be engaged throughout the engineering lifecycle from prototype assembly and testing to fault diagnosis and design validation, playing a vital role in moving concepts into equipment ready for mass production.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design, evaluate, and document mechanical components for transport mechanisms, vacuum and processing stations, including deposition enclosures and systems for substrate heating, cooling, and cleansing.
  • Assume full responsibility for technical projects involving applied research, design, fabrication, modification, and assessment of mechanical and electromechanical devices or systems.
  • Generate preliminary concepts for designated equipment or components, advancing them into detailed product designs.
  • Engage in design reviews, offering engineering insights into manufacturability, assembly feasibility, reliability, and ease of maintenance.
  • Develop, scrutinize, and approve precise 3D CAD models, engineering drawings, and all associated documentation.
  • Collaborate with vendors and internal teams to support manufacturing, troubleshoot technical issues, and ensure prompt delivery of parts and assemblies.
  • Facilitate prototype construction, testing procedures, troubleshooting, verification, validation, and subsequent transition to production phases.

Candidate Profile

  • Works effectively to select materials, interfaces, and finishes suited for precise engineering and contamination-controlled manufacturing environments.
  • Delivers clear engineering specifications and documentation that accurately convey design objectives to stakeholders and suppliers.
  • Translates technical requirements and constraints into practical, manufacturable solutions.
  • Employs a disciplined, data-driven problem-solving approach using prototyping, testing, analysis, and experimentation to guide design choices.
  • Demonstrates curiosity, creative thinking, and a commitment to continuous learning and process enhancement while addressing complex engineering problems.
  • Has a passion for engineering excellence and an eagerness to contribute to impactful products that add customer value and improve manufacturing outcomes.

Experience and Qualifications

  • Holds a Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering with 3 to 5 years of relevant professional experience.
  • Skilled in SolidWorks or equivalent 3D CAD software for creating solid models and production-level engineering drawings.
  • Comprehensive understanding of the engineering design lifecycle, encompassing feasibility studies, concept development, detailed design, design reviews, verification, validation, and production handover.
  • Knowledgeable in engineering change management processes such as Engineering Change Orders (ECOs) and Engineering Change Notices (ECNs), ensuring manufacturing-quality documentation release.
  • Experience in designing dynamic electromechanical systems or precise mechanical assemblies.
  • Familiar with design for manufacturability (DFM) and design for assembly (DFA) principles, including collaboration with vendors and fabricators.
  • Bonus familiarity with designing high-vacuum systems and heat transfer applications.
