Job description
About Dream Realization Lab
The Dream Realization Lab (DRL) functions as the product development division of Dhahran Techno Valley Company (DTVC). DRL transforms concepts and technologies into practical, well-engineered prototypes across diverse sectors, including energy, industrial systems, consumer gadgets, and smart solutions. Their tasks range from validating concepts and exploring feasibility to detailed design and creating functional prototypes. The lab develops manufacturable designs and prototype documentation prior to the industrial production phase. The team operates in a lean, agile manner, with every engineer playing a vital role in each project.
Role Overview
The role requires a Design Engineer proficient in both computer-aided design and hands-on prototype fabrication. The scope covers the entire product development cycle, starting from early conceptualization and feasibility assessments through detailed design, prototyping, and testing. Engineers partner closely with teams from Electrical, Controls, and Industrial Design disciplines to deliver cohesive solutions. Projects are diverse with tight deadlines and frequently involve novel problem-solving.
Key Responsibilities
- Create 3D parts and assemblies using SolidWorks, ensuring parametric model cleanliness and comprehensive engineering drawings.
- Integrate principles of Design for Manufacturing (DFM), Design for Assembly (DFA), and Design for Reliability (DFR) to guarantee manufacturability, ease of assembly, and serviceability.
- Conduct tolerance analyses and prepare GD&T-annotated drawings for internal fabrication processes.
- Synthesize multidisciplinary design constraints, converting Electrical, Controls, and Industrial Design inputs into mechanical solutions aligned with specified requirements.
- Construct, test, and refine physical prototypes employing technologies including FDM, resin and metal 3D printing, laser cutting, CNC machining, and manual fabrication methods.
- Apply 3D scanning and reverse engineering techniques to capture existing components or reference objects digitally.
- Plan and execute structured prototype testing to affirm design choices and iterate designs promptly based on test outcomes.
- Contribute proactively to enhancing lab operational processes, suggesting improved tools, methodologies, and workflows to accommodate team expansion.
- Dissect complex multidisciplinary challenges into manageable engineering tasks, driving toward validated and effective solutions.
- Innovate mechanical mechanisms and design solutions tailored to unique challenges lacking off-the-shelf options.
- Generate complete engineering documentation, including drawings, bills of materials (BOMs), assembly guidelines, and records of design rationale.
- Prepare clear and thorough technical reports capturing design decisions, testing outcomes, and prototype records to facilitate project handovers.
- Ensure well-maintained CAD file organization and robust revision control through the entire project lifecycle.
Required Qualifications & Experience
- A bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Product Development Engineering, or a closely related discipline.
- Several years of practical experience within product development, research and development, or prototyping sectors.
- Professional background established in environments with stringent engineering standards, such as consumer electronics, industrial machinery, medical technology, or robotics.
- Demonstrated success in delivering tangible physical prototypes rather than solely technical drawings.
Essential Technical Competencies
- Expert user of SolidWorks CAD software; familiarity with other 3D modeling environments is advantageous.
- Advanced skills in designing 3D parts incorporating both additive and subtractive manufacturing considerations.
- Proven capability with rapid prototyping technologies such as 3D printing, laser cutting, CNC machining, and 3D scanning.
- Competence in generating detailed engineering drawings with defined tolerances and applying GD&T standards.
- Exposure to Finite Element Analysis (FEA) or Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulation tools is desirable but not mandatory.
Personal Traits and Work Approach
- Strong communication aptitude enabling clear sharing of technical concepts across interdisciplinary teams.
- Hands-on mindset paired with a curious temperament, equally motivated by CAD modeling and actual workshop fabrication.
- Effective problem-solving skills, particularly for navigating unprecedented challenges without a predefined protocol.
- Highly organized and self-reliant, capable of independently managing multiple concurrent projects.
- A collaborative mindset thriving in a compact, rapid-paced, and evolving team atmosphere.
