Position Overview
The Marine Pilot is tasked with ensuring the safe and efficient pilotage of various vessel types within the port's jurisdiction. This role involves advising ship Masters, overseeing vessel maneuvering through navigation channels, enhancing berth utilization, and maintaining rigorous safety and operational standards. Reporting to the Harbor Master or Assistant Harbor Master, the pilot is also instrumental in sustaining business continuity through proactive marine planning.
Key Responsibilities
- Deliver skilled pilotage services to container ships, bulk carriers, tankers, Ro-Ro vessels, project cargo vessels, and other marine crafts within port boundaries.
- Guide vessel Masters on navigation, berthing/unberthing procedures, shifting, anchoring, and passage through harbor channels.
- Ensure strict adherence to port regulations, International Maritime Organization (IMO) mandates, and company protocols.
- Evaluate environmental and navigational factors such as tides, currents, visibility, weather conditions, under-keel clearance, and channel restrictions prior to vessel movements.
- Assist Marine Operations in effectively scheduling and managing vessel traffic to maximize berth productivity.
- Optimize scheduling around tidal windows without compromising safety priorities.
- Coordinate closely with Vessel Traffic Services (VTS), Marine Operations team, Terminal Operations, tugs, mooring teams, shipping agents, and port authorities.
- Cultivate and uphold a strong safety culture in line with corporate and statutory guidelines.
- Engage in risk assessments, incident reviews, emergency drills, and safety audits related to marine operations.
- Support inspections and readiness checks for tugs, pilot boats, mooring launches, navigational aids, and port infrastructure.
- Mentor and evaluate trainee pilots following approved competency standards.
- Foster effective relationships with vessel Masters, ship operators, marine providers, government bodies, and regulators.
- Respond promptly to marine emergencies and take part in crisis management activities and drills.
- Maintain detailed records including pilotage logs, operational reports, and statutory documents.
- Participate in a duty roster ensuring 24/7 marine operational coverage.
Performance Metrics
- Execution of pilotage with an emphasis on safety.
- Elimination of preventable marine incidents and navigation mishaps.
- Full compliance with marine safety and applicable regulatory standards.
- Efficiency in vessel turnaround times and berth usage.

Qualifications & Experience
- Possession of a Certificate of Competency (CoC) Class I (FG) awarded by DG Shipping or a recognized equivalent.
- Valid Pilot License or qualified to obtain one as per legal standards.
- Extensive experience serving as a ship Master on merchant vessels.
- Comprehensive knowledge of ship handling, bridge resource management, navigation, port operations, and maritime regulations.
- Previous experience in pilotage is desirable.
