Marine Operations Superintendent

Job Overview

The Marine Operations Superintendent is responsible for ensuring the safe, efficient, and cost-effective operation of vessels, fully complying with Flag State, regulatory, company, and customer standards. This role oversees the implementation of navigation, seamanship, and cargo handling policies on board.

Key Responsibilities

• Manage cargo operations efficiently and ensure vessels operate safely, reliably, and economically according to company and industry standards.
• Ensure full compliance with international maritime regulations, Flag State laws, company policies, and port, terminal, and oil & gas major requirements.
• Maintain valid vessel trading certificates and statutory documents at all times.
• Represent owner/operator in commercial and emergency Ship-to-Ship operations.
• Coordinate vessel vetting inspections (SIRE, CDI) and address observations by implementing corrective actions.
• Maintain accurate vessel information in systems such as VPQ, SIRE, TMSA, and Q88.
• Conduct regular inspections and audits (navigational, cargo, galley, HSSEQ/SHEQ) as per Safety Management System and ISM Code, including during port calls or sailing visits.
• Support development and continuous improvement of the Safety Management System alongside the Fleet HSSEQ function.
• Brief newly appointed senior officers on safety management, company policies, vessel operations, and charterer-specific requirements.
• Monitor third-party managed vessels to ensure adherence to contractual and charter party obligations.
• Supervise voyage planning and monitor vessel performance to meet statutory and charter requirements, aiding in minimizing or contesting performance-related claims.
• Participate in ship/shore interface activities and compatibility studies for terminals, liaising with agents and stakeholders to assess berthing suitability.
• Lead marine incident investigations and ensure timely closure of corrective actions.
• Conduct operational safety and environmental risk assessments according to maritime standards and best practices.
• Execute responsibilities under the Emergency Response Plan and support response teams during emergencies.
• Collaborate with fleet leadership on personnel management including promotions, career development, recruitment, and conduct assessments.
• Maintain effective communication channels between management and vessel personnel, providing marine supervision and operational support.
• Undertake vessel visits as required and promote quality improvement initiatives.

Required Qualifications and Experience

• Bachelor's degree in Nautical Science or relevant discipline and/or Master Mariner Certificate of Competency with associated certifications.
• 8 to 12 years of maritime experience, including a minimum of 3 years as Master on LNG/LPG or crude/oil carriers.
• Preferably 2+ years in shore-based or head office management within a major gas or oil shipping company.
• Experience working with diverse cultural and professional backgrounds, including shipowners and crews.

Essential Skills

• In-depth knowledge of international and national maritime laws including SOLAS, ISM, MARPOL, ISPS, SOPEP, and relevant ISO standards.
• Familiarity with emergency response protocols, ship vetting, and vessel inspection procedures.
• Auditing skills, preferably with Lead Auditor certification or experience in ISO, ISM, and ISPS audits.
• Strong understanding of marine operations, navigation, cargo operations, and vessel safety management.
• Excellent communication and stakeholder management abilities.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications.
