Role Overview
The Manual Scaler position is integral to maintaining safe underground mining conditions by removing loose or unstable rock from mine backs, walls, and faces. Reporting to the Supervisor - Scaling, candidates will be responsible for ensuring the safety of ground conditions to prevent rockfalls. This role offers an entry-level opportunity with preference for underground mining or scaling experience, but comprehensive training will be provided.
Key Responsibilities
- Utilize handheld scaling bars to manually remove unsafe rock.
- Inspect ground conditions and travel pathways to detect potential hazards like cracks, wedges, slabs, or loose materials.
- Conduct Stop Look Assess Manage (SLAM) safety assessments before scaling activities.
- Report unsafe ground conditions promptly to supervisors and geotechnical engineers.
- Adhere strictly to ground control plans, engineering guidance, and established safe work procedures.
- Ensure work zones are clearly signed and barricaded following operational standards.
- Maintain cleanliness and security of the work area post-scaling.
- Document scaling activities accurately and submit for geotechnical evaluation.
- Support geotechnical engineers in pull testing ground supports such as resin bolts, split sets, and cable bolts to confirm installation adherence.
- Assist with setting up and operating pull-testing equipment.
Candidate Requirements
- Possess a valid manual driver’s license.
- Experience operating Manitou or similar equipment with a manbasket.
- Previous hands-on experience in manual scaling within underground mining is preferred.
- Physically fit and willing to engage in a physically demanding and manual-intensive role.
- Strong safety orientation with proactive hazard identification and management capabilities.
- Reliable attendance, safety compliance, and the ability to work both independently and collaboratively.
- Good problem-solving abilities, adaptability to multi-skilled tasks, and eagerness to learn.
- Self-driven and capable of maintaining productivity in challenging underground conditions.
- Must be able to successfully pass a pre-employment medical examination including drug and alcohol testing.
Work Schedule and Location
This permanent role operates on a 7 days on, 7 days off continuous day and night roster based in Mount Isa, offering daily residential living and a balanced lifestyle.
