About Affirm and Role Overview
Affirm is transforming the credit landscape by providing transparent and consumer-friendly payment solutions such as buy now, pay later, without hidden fees or compound interest. We are looking for an experienced Engineering Manager to head our Resilience Engineering team. This pivotal position involves guaranteeing our production systems' reliability and security through proactive validation techniques, including production load testing and chaos engineering.
Key Responsibilities
- Establish and steer the strategic direction for resilience engineering at Affirm, prioritizing production load testing and chaos engineering as core technical practices.
- Lead and mentor a team dedicated to building tools and platforms that facilitate safe production experimentation.
- Collaborate with leadership across infrastructure, product, and security to seamlessly integrate resilience verification throughout the software development lifecycle.
- Design and refine platforms that enable controlled and safe production load testing and fault injection.
- Implement robust safeguards such as isolation borders, approval workflows, and automated rollback mechanisms to shield users during testing.
- Create systems ensuring comprehensive end-to-end observability, traceability, and audit capabilities for all resilience tests.
- Drive reliability enhancements by identifying system vulnerabilities through systematic load testing and chaos experiments.
- Define monitoring, alerting, and incident response tailored specifically for proactive resilience validation.
- Support engineering teams to design and conduct production load tests and chaos experiments safely, and partner with infrastructure to build testing guardrails.
- Provide reusable tools, frameworks, and standardized workflows to help teams embed resilience practices effectively.
- Champion the organizational culture of "test failure before failure tests you" and lead cross-functional improvements for fault tolerance.
Candidate Profile
- Demonstrated leadership experience managing engineering teams focused on reliability, infrastructure, or distributed systems.
- Practical experience with production load testing, chaos engineering, or validation of large-scale systems.
- Familiarity operating chaos engineering platforms such as Gremlin or Harness.
- Deep knowledge of failure scenarios in distributed systems including latency issues, partial failures, and cascading outages.
- Proven expertise in building or managing systems with strong safety measures like isolation, rate limiting, guardrails, and audit trails.
- Experience working in cloud-native environments such as AWS and Kubernetes, coupled with observability tooling proficiency.
- Strong programming skills in languages like Python, Kotlin, Java, or comparable technologies.
- Excellent problem-solving capability with the ability to balance strategic resilience investments against immediate business priorities.
- Effective communication and leadership skills with a history of influencing engineering processes across multiple teams.
