Job description
About Halter
Halter is dedicated to transforming agriculture by enabling farmers and graziers to operate more productively and sustainably. Our technology allows for innovative grazing management without the need for traditional tools like quad bikes, dogs, or fences — imagine a herd moving calmly at its own pace. Our customers are revolutionizing pasture management, improving lives and reshaping the industry. Joining Halter means facing challenging problems in a culture committed to high performance and meaningful impact, supported by top-tier investors.
Role Overview
The Predictive Systems team at Halter focuses on building advanced models that provide farmers with precise insights to optimize their operations. We leverage cutting-edge scientific advancements and unique data sources to create innovative agricultural modeling systems. As part of one of our machine learning teams, you could be developing models for pasture growth, land properties, animal health and activity monitoring, and more. Projects might include remote sensing of pasture biomass, detecting animal heat events, and simulating grazing intervals to deliver refined recommendations.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop predictive models that simulate biological processes and farm operations to address real-world farming challenges.
- Conduct comprehensive research in both machine learning techniques and agricultural sciences to stay at the forefront of innovation.
- Architect and build machine learning models from dataset design and training to optimization, rarely relying on off-the-shelf solutions.
- Maintain ownership of deployed models by monitoring their performance and learning from system behaviors in production.
- Bring creativity and initiative in generating innovative ideas within the data discipline.
Candidate Profile
- A versatile, high-output generalist capable of working autonomously across infrastructure, databases, simulation, and machine learning development, and keen to leverage AI tools for productivity.
- A seasoned machine learning expert with strong theoretical knowledge applied to pasture efficiency and complex systems.
- Experience converting cutting-edge academic research into practical predictive systems, including multi-modal time-series modeling and simulation techniques.
- A strong desire to deeply understand pasture-based farming to provide meaningful insights and improvements for farmers.
- A strategic and product-focused thinker able to map extensive farm data into impactful solutions.
- Comfortable working amid uncertainty and ambiguity, with the ability to take calculated risks and collaborate effectively with diverse teams.
Qualifications and Skills
- Advanced academic or professional background relating to machine learning, such as a research-oriented postgraduate degree in mathematics or computer science emphasizing deep neural network modeling.
- Proven experience designing, deploying, and monitoring machine learning models in production environments.
- Strong causal reasoning and aptitude for creating models that reflect real-world systems.
- Expertise handling complex, noisy, high-dimensional datasets.
- Fluency in Python, with experience contributing to collaborative codebases.
- Proficiency with modern AI productivity tools and companions (e.g., Copilot, ChatGPT, Cursor, Claude-code).
- Excellent communication skills and a cooperative, interdisciplinary approach.
- Bonus: Familiarity with advanced ML architectures like Transformers or State Space Models, agent-based systems, or recommendation engines.
Work Environment and Culture
Halter emphasizes an office-first culture that fosters deep, meaningful connections among employees, encouraging growth, learning, and impactful collaboration. While primarily office-based to maximize these benefits, we offer flexibility when needed under a high-trust framework. Our energetic and inspiring workplace is praised by those who have transitioned from fully remote or hybrid environments.
Diversity and Inclusion
We are committed to fostering a diverse and inclusive workplace where everyone can thrive and contribute their best work. We encourage candidates who may not meet every qualification to apply, as we value potential and fit.
Why Join Halter?
