About the Company and Role

Be part of a multinational corporation operating in over 220 countries, pioneering cross-border express shipping since 1969. DHL Global Forwarding, Freight (DGFF) specializes in air, ocean, and road freight, providing standard and end-to-end transport solutions for diverse industries worldwide.

As a Life Science Controller based in Johannesburg, South Africa, you will manage and control Life Science and Healthcare shipments for import and export. Your role will ensure compliance with client instructions, Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), SARS, WHO, IATA regulations, and adherence to GXP and industry best practices.

Core Responsibilities

  • Inspect and manage pre-conditioning, build-up, and dismantling of active Unit Load Devices (ULDs) like Envirotainer and CSafe, along with passive temperature-controlled packaging such as pallet shippers and Silver pods.
  • Perform random physical checks of inbound and outbound cargo shipments.
  • Ensure customer requirements are fulfilled and initiate corrective measures when deviations occur.
  • Maintain and apply Good Distribution Practice (GDP) standards in coordination with Thermonet and Life Track services.
  • Handle goods within specified temperature ranges as per documentation and SOPs, ensuring proper storage conditions.
  • Support contractors in adhering to quality procedures.
  • Instruct warehouse personnel on correct shipment handling, enforcing CSOPs and internal SOPs/WIs compliance.
  • Collaborate with Customer Service, Product teams, and Global Service Centers as needed.
  • Monitor and manage inbound cold chain logistics, including communication of flight delays and re-icing container processes.
  • Comply with all Life Science Health Environment (LSHE) SOPs and CSOPs in daily tasks.
  • Arrange deliveries, manage Delivery Center bookings, notify drivers of preconditioning requirements, and track temperatures during transport via monitoring systems.
  • Process, manage, and distribute all necessary shipping documents in dispatch and receiving zones.
  • Receive, process, and forward customs documents between airlines, lead/hub stations, customs brokers, and authorities.
  • Record all inbound and outbound deliveries accurately.
  • Update system data across CW1, Movation, and control sheets among other platforms.
  • Handle invoicing responsibilities.
  • Manage icing and re-icing for Envirotainer and similar containers.

Candidate Requirements

  • Knowledge of health and safety regulations.
  • Customer service orientation with ability to address client needs promptly and courteously.
  • Basic financial understanding, including revenue, costs, and gross profit metrics.
  • Commercially driven attitude.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, Word, and Outlook.
  • Strong computer and Microsoft Office literacy.
  • Completion of DHL Air Thermonet and My Talent World e-learning curricula.
  • Excellent mathematical skills.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of air freight logistics and operational processes.
  • Awareness of global logistics and geographical considerations.
  • Good administrative abilities and familiarity with logistics systems.
  • Strong attention to detail and result-oriented approach.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Certification and training fulfilling Thermonet standards.
  • Willingness to work weekend overtime when required.
  • Forklift license (preferably F2) advantageous for assisting warehouse operations.
  • 3 to 5 years of operational experience in freight forwarding and logistics.
  • Matriculation certificate or equivalent educational qualification.
  • Advanced competency in computer usage.
