Job description

Position Overview

The Department of Computer Science and Software Engineering at the University of Canterbury in Christchurch, New Zealand, invites applications for two permanent full-time academic roles as Lecturer or Senior Lecturer. These positions start in January 2027 and include participation in the university's joint education program with Xi'an University of Architecture and Technology in China.

Role Specializations

There are two focus areas for these positions:

  • Scalable Data and Computing Systems: Responsibilities include enhancing teaching in Big Data Computing and related systems, along with research in distributed systems, cloud and edge computing, high-performance and parallel computing, large-scale data processing, resource management, sustainable computing, and computing infrastructure for data-intensive applications.
  • Software and Network Security: Teaching foundational computer science modules such as introductory programming and specialized topics like secure software development, ethical hacking, penetration testing, and network security. The candidate is expected to link fundamental computing concepts with hands-on security practices and develop a strong research program.

Key Duties

  • Deliver teaching to undergraduate and postgraduate students, including curriculum innovation.
  • Establish and maintain an active, externally funded research portfolio.
  • Supervise postgraduate research students.
  • Collaborate across disciplines and with external partners such as industry and government.
  • Contribute to department, faculty, and university service and leadership.

Candidate Profile

  • PhD in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a closely related field (or near completion).
  • Strong research record appropriate to career stage.
  • Expertise in either scalable data/computing systems or software/network security.
  • Proven teaching effectiveness employing inclusive and innovative pedagogical methods.
  • Excellent collegiality, communication, leadership skills, and commitment to an inclusive environment.
  • Willingness to engage with industry and community partners to enhance research impact.
