Lecturer (Teaching & Administration) in Software Engineering

About the Role

The Department of Computer Science and Software Engineering at the University of Canterbury offers a permanent full-time role focused on teaching and academic administration, particularly contributing to the new Master of Software Engineering programme. The successful candidate will engage in delivering undergraduate and postgraduate courses, with a focus on advanced topics such as software dependability, verification and validation, software quality and testing, secure software engineering, and software architecture and design. This position also includes teaching duties in China, supporting a joint programme with Xi'an University of Architecture and Technology.

Key Responsibilities

• Deliver and coordinate courses at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels, prioritizing the Master of Software Engineering programme.
• Create inclusive and engaging learning experiences grounded in engineering fundamentals and relevant contemporary tools and real-world software systems.
• Participate in academic administration including assessment moderation, curriculum planning, quality assurance, student advising, and service activities at departmental, faculty, and university levels.
• Contribute to the joint offshore teaching programme in China.

Candidate Profile

• Possess a PhD (or near completion/submitted for examination) in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a closely related discipline.
• Demonstrate confidence in teaching theoretical and practical material using modern software engineering techniques and relevant tools for analysis, testing, security, or verification.
• Show flexibility to teach across a broad set of software engineering and computing topics beyond narrow specializations.
• Exhibit effective teaching strategies that are inclusive and innovative.
• Prove collegiality, communication, leadership skills, and a commitment to fostering an inclusive academic environment.
• Willingness to collaborate with industry and community partners to extend impact and visibility.

Additional Information

The role requires participation in the joint education programme with Xi'an University of Architecture and Technology, China. The salary scale ranges from NZD 70,258 to 123,687 per annum.
