About the Role
At Thames-Coromandel District Council, the Kaihautū - Māori Development Manager plays a pivotal role in fostering partnerships that honor the distinct identity, aspirations, and future goals of Hauraki and the Coromandel Peninsula. This leader is responsible for integrating Māori perspectives into Council planning, decision-making, and community outcomes. A key function includes championing the Māori Engagement Strategy and offering trusted strategic advice throughout the organisation. The role involves collaborating closely with mana whenua, iwi, hapū, marae, elected representatives, and Council leadership to nurture enduring partnerships.
Key Responsibilities
- Deliver strategic guidance concerning Māori aspirations, Te Tiriti o Waitangi responsibilities, opportunities, and emerging issues.
- Establish and sustain strong relationships with mana whenua, iwi, hapū, marae, and Māori entities.
- Drive impactful Māori engagement and involvement across the Council’s planning, projects, and decision-making frameworks.
- Support initiatives that enhance community resilience, including wellbeing, climate resilience, emergency readiness, and forward-looking planning.
- Design and lead a cultural capability programme across the organisation to deepen understanding and practical application of Te Tiriti and tikanga Māori.
Candidate Profile
- Proven experience collaborating effectively with iwi, hapū, and Māori communities.
- Comprehensive understanding of Te Tiriti o Waitangi and its application in local government or similar sectors.
- Track record of building strategic relationships and enabling meaningful engagement.
- Competency in Te Reo Māori and tikanga Māori, accompanied by solid knowledge of mātauranga Māori.
- Exceptional communication, influence, and relationship management capabilities.
- Political savvy, sound judgement, and skill navigating complex stakeholder environments.
Experience relevant to the Hauraki or nearby regions, community development, resilience, environmental management, or local government is highly regarded.
