Job description

About Halter

Halter is dedicated to empowering farmers and graziers to manage highly productive and sustainable operations. Using Halter's technology, customers experience a revolutionary way to manage livestock, for instance, calmly herding 500 cattle to their next grazing area without using traditional methods like quad bikes or fences. This innovation is transforming farming practices and lives globally. Halter values meaningful work and fosters a culture focused on high performance, problem-solving, and making a tangible impact. The company is supported by top-tier investors including Founders Fund, Bessemer Venture Partners, and Rocket Lab’s Peter Beck.

Role Overview

The Intermediate Field Operations Engineer role bridges hardware operations, customer support, and engineering. You will manage day-to-day fleet monitoring, troubleshoot and resolve hardware issues, and enhance tooling and processes that enable efficient scaling of Field Operations globally. Collaboration will be essential across teams such as Field Engineers, Product, Deployment, and Software to improve incident detection, investigation, and resolution.

Key Responsibilities

  • Monitor device performance metrics proactively to detect collar and tower malfunctions.
  • Handle technical support tickets focused on collar functionality and tower hardware issues.
  • Lead end-to-end investigations, from triaging issues to root cause analysis and resolution, escalating as appropriate.
  • Work closely with customer teams for smooth issue handovers and timely solutions.
  • Coordinate with Deployment, Product, and Engineering teams to communicate incidents and follow-up actions.
  • Maintain and contribute to internal documentation regarding known hardware issues.
  • Identify and implement workflow improvements to reduce manual tasks and improve efficiency.
  • Develop and maintain internal tools that assist in monitoring, investigation, and incident response for global operations.
  • Enhance processes including triage protocols, escalation procedures, and automate detection of failure patterns.
  • Integrate tooling with core systems to improve data accuracy and operational visibility.
  • Occasionally work onsite with field teams at customer farms to address hardware concerns in person.

Candidate Profile

  • Previous experience in technical operations, support engineering, or related fields; backgrounds in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or Mechatronics are advantageous but not mandatory.
  • Strong analytical skills with the capability to dissect ambiguous challenges and convert them into actionable steps.
  • Comfortable working with data systems, dashboards, logs, APIs, and internal tools.
  • Proven experience building or automating tools and scalable workflows which others depend on.
  • Excellent technical troubleshooting aptitude with a proactive, hands-on approach.
  • Exceptional attention to detail, recognizing data patterns and acting accordingly.
  • Effective communication skills to convey technical concepts clearly to varied audiences.
  • Excellent time management to balance urgent support tasks with strategic improvements.
  • Ability to adapt and thrive in dynamic, fast-paced environments where priorities shift frequently.
  • A strong commitment to supporting farmers and contributing to Halter’s transformative mission.

Additional Technical Focus (depending on specialization)

  • Frontend: expertise in user experience design, modern JavaScript frameworks like React or React Native, and optimization for real devices.
  • Backend: proficiency in building and scaling REST APIs, distributed event-driven systems, working with relational and non-relational databases. Familiarity with Node.js, Kotlin, Go, or hardware/IoT integration is beneficial.
  • Full-stack: comprehensive skills across frontend, backend, web, mobile, and associated services.

Working Conditions

  • Full-time role based in Auckland headquarters with some scheduled on-call shifts.
  • Standard days off are Saturday and Sunday; weekend on-call rotations apply.

Why Join Halter

  • Contribute to impactful work that transforms farming practices, improving livelihoods and sustainability.
  • Collaborate with driven, diverse colleagues on challenging and meaningful problems.
  • Opportunity for personal growth with autonomy and a $1,000 personal development fund.
  • Experience a fast-paced environment that encourages bold innovation and collective success.
