About the Role
Black & McDonald’s Calgary Utilities division is expanding. This role offers a committed and team-focused individual the chance to be part of an innovative workforce. Reporting directly to the Project Manager, the HDD Operator/Locator is fundamental in the safe and effective installation of underground utilities by operating directional drills with emphasis on safety, equipment care, and accuracy. The position requires interpreting site plans, coordinating with peers, and conducting pre-operation checks and maintenance.
Key Responsibilities
- Operate directional drills safely during underground utility installations, including in residential neighborhoods.
- Maintain equipment through safe operation and essential routine maintenance tasks.
- Interpret blueprints, staking, and signage accurately to guide operations.
- Coordinate daily equipment activities involving drivers and operators.
- Perform and document safety inspections prior to operations, including fueling and greasing to ensure optimal drill performance.
- Assist with general labor duties as necessary.

Education and Experience
- Must have a High School Diploma.
- A minimum of five years’ proven experience operating Horizontal Directional Drill Rig (specifically models such as Vermeer D20 x 22 Series 3 and Vermeer 24X40) within construction.
Requirements and Certifications
- Valid Alberta Class 1 or Class 3 driver's license with air brakes endorsement and a clean three-year abstract.
- Current CSTS/Ground Disturbance certification.
- Willingness to travel out of town when required.
- Attributes such as safety awareness, problem-solving aptitude, high attention to detail, adaptability, initiative, and ability to work independently.
- Physical fitness for manual labor and working in various environmental conditions.
Additional Safety Certifications (Preferred)
- Confined Space Awareness and Rescue.
- Fall Arrest training.
- WHMIS certification.
- First Aid qualification.
