Horizontal Directional Drilling (HDD) Operator

About the Role

Join the growing Utilities team at Black & McDonald in Edmonton as a dedicated HDD Operator. This role focuses on the safe and effective underground utility installation using directional drill equipment. Operating under the Project Manager's supervision, the incumbent is required to maintain equipment, execute pre-operation safety checks, and ensure the accurate completion of projects in adherence to site plans and work specifications.

Key Responsibilities

• Operate directional drilling equipment with emphasis on safety and precision.
• Execute drilling tasks in residential zones as assigned.
• Responsible for routine equipment maintenance and safe handling of machinery.
• Interpret technical drawings, markings, and instruction signs effectively.
• Coordinate equipment use and schedules with team drivers and operators.
• Perform and document safety inspections focusing on fueling and lubrication before operations.
• Assist with general labor duties as necessary.

Required Qualifications and Experience

• High School diploma or equivalent.
• At least 5 years of construction industry experience operating HDD rigs, specifically Vermeer D20 x 22 Series 3 and Vermeer 24X40 models.
• Class 1 or Class 3 driver's license with air brakes endorsement.
• Valid Alberta driver's license and a clean driving record over the past 3 years.
• Possession of a CSTS/Ground Disturbance certification.
• Willingness to travel out of town when required.
• Physical capability suitable for manual labor in various weather conditions.
• Personal attributes: safety conscious, detail-oriented, adaptable, able to work autonomously and take initiative.
