Gunner

Overview

As a Gunner in the Canadian Armed Forces, you will be responsible for surveillance, target acquisition, and delivering indirect fire to engage adversaries. Your role involves operating and maintaining various artillery systems including howitzers, mortars, radars, acoustic devices, uncrewed aerial systems, and armored fighting vehicles. Collaboration with other combat arms such as Armour, Infantry, Combat Engineers, along with multiple support units is essential both on the battlefield and otherwise.

Key Responsibilities

• Operate and maintain 105mm and 155mm howitzers.
• Manage the operation and upkeep of future Ground Based Air Defense Systems.
• Handle surveillance and target acquisition tools including radars, acoustic equipment, and unmanned aerial vehicles.
• Operate a range of vehicles from ¼ ton trucks up to 7 ton trucks, including Tactical Armoured Patrol Vehicles (TAPV) and Light Armoured Vehicles (LAV 6.0).
• Utilize advanced command-post computing systems, laser range-finders, and fire control computers.

Work Environment

Gunners may be required to serve across diverse environments such as Arctic tundra, tropical jungles, deserts, mountains, and urban settings. Deployments include both overseas missions and domestic support during national emergencies. Initial postings are to one of five artillery regiments located in Manitoba, Ontario, New Brunswick, and Quebec.

Training and Career Path

The training journey begins with a 9-week Basic Military Qualification course emphasizing fundamental skills and physical fitness. Subsequently, a 9-week specialized course at The Royal Regiment of Canadian Artillery School hones advanced artillery skills, radio communications, vehicle operation, and weapons handling. Post-training, Gunners develop further expertise in specific streams such as Gun Area, Observation Post, Surveillance and Target Acquisition, or Ground Based Air Defence.

Part-Time Opportunities

There are options to serve part-time in the Primary Reserve, typically involving weekly evening and weekend duties without mandatory relocation. Reservists receive comparable training, remuneration at 92.8% of Regular Force pay rates, benefits, and may contribute to a pension plan. Reserve service allows flexibility for civilian employment or education alongside military commitments.

Entry Requirements

• No prior experience or related skills are necessary; recruiters assist applicants in evaluating suitability.
• The minimum educational qualification is completion of Grade 10 or equivalent provincial secondary education (Secondary 4 in Quebec).
• Recognition of foreign education credentials may be considered.
