Job description

About SYOS Aerospace

At SYOS Aerospace, we are revolutionizing autonomous technology across air, land, and sea by transforming ambitious concepts into practical, real-world systems. Located at scenic Mount Maunganui, Bay of Plenty, New Zealand, we push the boundaries of autonomous systems development.

Role Overview

We are seeking a GNC Engineer to contribute to the development of intelligent controls for our autonomous vehicles. This position involves moving sophisticated algorithms and equations from simulation and modeling phases to embedded implementation, rigorous testing, and actual deployment. Collaborate closely with a multidisciplinary team to bring autonomous UAVs, UGVs, and USVs alive and fully functional.

Key Responsibilities

  • Create, develop, and deploy guidance, navigation, and control algorithms tailored for autonomous aerial, ground, and sea platforms.
  • Engineer state estimation and sensor fusion solutions utilizing data from GPS, IMUs, LiDAR, and vision sensors.
  • Model and simulate control systems to anticipate performance, identify potential issues, and optimize designs.
  • Fine-tune and calibrate control systems to ensure accurate and consistent vehicle performance.
  • Collaborate closely with software and systems engineering teams for seamless integration of GNC algorithms into embedded systems.
  • Design and implement robust testing and validation frameworks including simulations, hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) testing, and live platform trials.
  • Perform detailed analysis of vehicle test data, identify discrepancies, and troubleshoot performance challenges.
  • Iterate and enhance algorithmic solutions based on operational testing feedback.
  • Maintain comprehensive documentation of design processes, algorithm development, test outcomes, and engineering decisions.

Candidate Profile

  • Holds a Bachelor’s degree in Aerospace Engineering, Robotics, Electrical Engineering, or a comparable field.
  • Brings over two years of professional experience in guidance, navigation, and control, controls engineering, robotics, aerospace, or autonomous system development.
  • Demonstrates hands-on experience in developing or working with GNC algorithms on autonomous platforms.
  • Possesses an in-depth knowledge of control theory, sensor fusion techniques, and state estimation.
  • Experienced in MATLAB/Simulink for system modeling, simulation, and analytical purposes.
  • Familiarity with real-time embedded systems and hardware-in-the-loop testing is advantageous.
  • Strong analytical mindset combined with practical problem-solving capabilities.
  • Adopts a collaborative engineering approach, integrating software, electrical, mechanical, and systems disciplines effectively.
