Job description
About the Role
Join our Graphics Kernel API team as a Graphics Engineer focused on building a low-level, platform-agnostic graphics abstraction layer that offers Unity a unified interface compatible with multiple graphics drivers and platforms. This key layer aligns driver teams and underpins the wider engine structure, ensuring consistency and reliability across various backends.
Key Responsibilities
- Create and uphold the shared API and cross-driver abstraction layers, guaranteeing uniform behavior across multiple graphics backends such as Direct3D 12, Vulkan, Metal, WebGPU, and consoles.
- Develop and enhance the validation framework and conformance test suite to detect early misuse and standardize implementation quality.
- Collaborate closely with underlying driver development teams to ensure API updates are feasible and performant on hardware.
- Boost the performance, testability, and robustness from the API surface right down to command transmission to drivers.
- Document and specify evolving API designs to maintain coherence.
- Participate actively in design and code review processes.
- Engage with stakeholders and higher engine teams to gather requirements, plan tasks, and resolve issues effectively.
Required Qualifications
- Strong foundation in software engineering fundamentals and experience with multi-threaded C++ programming.
- Good understanding of real-time 3D graphics programming, including modern GPU design and resource management.
- Familiarity with at least one modern graphics API, such as Direct3D 12, Vulkan, or Metal.
- Ability to troubleshoot bugs and optimize performance using standard industry tools.
- Proactive mindset with collaborative communication skills and passion for rendering and cross-platform development.
- Adaptability to explore and learn complex new technical areas as needed.
Preferred Experience
- Background in writing conformance tests, validation layers, or tools enforcing consistent multi-implementation standards.
- Experience with CPU/GPU debugging and profiling tools like RenderDoc, PIX, or platform-specific capture utilities.
- Hands-on use of Unity or other real-time 3D engines.
