Role Overview

We are seeking a skilled GNC / Autonomy Engineer to serve as a key technical authority within our autonomy engineering team. This role involves advancing the autonomy capabilities of our next-generation vehicles, including UAVs, UGVs, and USVs. You will engage with various autonomy domains such as guidance, navigation, control, perception, sensor fusion, machine learning, computer vision, and autonomous decision-making.

Key Responsibilities

• Serve as a trusted expert and mentor for the autonomy engineering group, guiding complex problem-solving and fostering engineering best practices.
• Lead technical development in autonomy-related fields covering GNC, perception, sensor fusion, machine learning, and computer vision.
• Enhance autonomy solutions spanning multiple robotic platforms, from initial modeling to embedded implementation and deployment.
• Apply comprehensive systems engineering expertise to align autonomy with vehicle interfaces, sensors, software, and hardware.
• Collaborate closely with various teams including Software, Systems, Mechatronics, Electronics, and Flight Test to address interdisciplinary challenges.
• Influence and review technical decisions and contribute towards shaping SYOS’s autonomy strategy as the company scales.
• Provide mentorship and coaching to elevate team capability and knowledge sharing.
• Stay well-informed on emerging autonomy technologies, identifying opportunities to improve SYOS's offerings.
• Engage hands-on when needed, particularly in tackling challenging integration and testing tasks.

Required Qualifications and Skills

• Extensive experience in autonomy engineering, robotics, guidance, navigation and control, software, or mechatronics.
• Exposure to complex autonomous systems and interdisciplinary engineering collaboration.
• Proven senior technical contributor or leader, able to mentor and guide engineers.
• Strong foundation in autonomy areas such as navigation, control, perception, sensor fusion, and autonomous decision-making.
• Experience with UAV, UGV, or USV platforms, including development or integration of autonomous systems.
• Understanding or practical experience with systems-level engineering encompassing requirements, interfaces, integration, and verification.
• Demonstrated mentorship capabilities to uplift engineering teams.
• Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to balance detailed work and strategic oversight.
• Hands-on approach to engineering tasks, integration processes, and testing methodologies.
• Effective communication skills to influence without hierarchical authority.
• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Aerospace Engineering, Robotics, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Mechatronics, or related fields.

Preferred Skills

• Knowledge of machine learning, computer vision, or perception technologies.
• Advanced understanding of guidance, navigation, and control including control theory, state estimation, and sensor fusion.
• Familiarity with MATLAB/Simulink, C++, and/or Python programming.
• Experience using ROS/ROS2, PX4, or ArduPilot autopilot systems.
• Background in real-time embedded systems or hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) testing.
• Track record of taking autonomous systems through research, testing, and operational deployment.
• Experience operating within a systems engineering framework.
• Previous roles in aerospace, defense, robotics, maritime, or other advanced technology sectors.
