Role Overview
This full-time, on-location position situated in Bahir Dar focuses on Geographic Information Systems (GIS). The GIS Analyst will be responsible for gathering, processing, and managing both spatial and tabular datasets to support planning, infrastructure development, and policy projects. Key duties include developing and updating GIS databases, conducting spatial and statistical analyses, and generating maps and visual representations for reports and presentations. The role requires collaboration with internal teams to deliver data-driven insights, resolving GIS issues, and carefully documenting processes to maintain data integrity and consistency.
Key Responsibilities
- Create and maintain comprehensive GIS datasets to support various initiatives.
- Perform detailed spatial and statistical analyses to guide planning and policy decisions.
- Produce maps and visualizations suitable for reports and presentations aimed at diverse audiences.
- Assist internal teams by providing actionable geospatial insights and troubleshooting GIS-related challenges.
- Document workflows thoroughly to ensure high-quality data management and reproducibility.
- Collaborate with colleagues and stakeholders to understand needs and deliver clear geospatial products.
Necessary Qualifications
- In-depth knowledge of GIS principles and analysis methods.
- Hands-on experience with GIS software such as ArcGIS, QGIS, or comparable platforms.
- Strong skills in data management, including organizing, cleaning, and maintaining both spatial and non-spatial datasets.
- Advanced analytical capabilities for interpreting spatial patterns and conducting geospatial modeling.
- A bachelor's degree in geography, geomatics, GIS, environmental science, urban planning, computer science, or a related field.
- Competence in designing clear maps and visualizations and the ability to explain technical information to non-expert audiences.
- Excellent attention to detail, problem-solving aptitude, and capacity to handle multiple projects simultaneously.
- Experience with basic scripting or automation tools like Python or SQL is considered a plus.
- Strong interpersonal and teamwork skills, with a capacity to work well in an on-site team environment based in Bahir Dar.
