About the Team

The Merchant EMEA Engineering team crafts technology that supports merchants in launching, scaling, and operating efficiently across 37 markets. This team combines expertise from both Wolt and Deliveroo to support merchants through the entire customer journey, including onboarding, business growth, analytics, menu and order management, system integrations, and merchant-centric applications. Instead of focusing on foundational platforms, the team develops market-specific features and products addressing real operational and growth challenges faced by merchants. This position is based in Wolt's tech hubs located in Helsinki or Berlin.

Role Responsibilities

• Develop and uphold production-quality software spanning backend services and frontend applications that merchants use.
• Engage in projects related to merchant onboarding, analytics, personalized recommendations, menu and order management, system integrations, or tools aimed at merchants.
• Create reliable APIs, design data models, build services, and implement user-facing features.
• Collaborate with cross-functional teams including product managers, designers, operations staff, and fellow engineers to translate business requirements into viable technical solutions.
• Take full ownership of features from design through deployment and ongoing support.
• Participate in architectural discussions to enhance system scalability, maintainability, quality, and observability.
• Integrate AI-powered development tools effectively within workflows, exercising critical judgment over their outputs and owning the final implementations.
• Demonstrate adaptability by working beyond primary skill areas as needed to deliver complete solutions.

Technology Stack

Backend development primarily utilizes Go and Kotlin, while frontend applications are built with TypeScript and React. Additional technologies include Kafka for streaming, PostgreSQL and MongoDB databases, Redis caching, AWS cloud services, Kubernetes orchestration, Docker containerization, gRPC communication, and modern cloud infrastructure.

Candidate Profile

• Strong AI-first approach, leveraging modern AI tools along with sound engineering discipline to independently solve complex problems regardless of specific technologies.
• Proven experience delivering production software at scale in backend, frontend, or fullstack environments.
• Expertise in at least one technical domain, with readiness to contribute across the stack when necessary.
• Familiarity with modern backend languages such as Go, Kotlin, or Java and/or frontend technologies such as TypeScript and React.
• Solid understanding of core software concepts including APIs, databases, testing, and design patterns.
• Ability to independently address well-defined problems and collaborate effectively within teams.
• Good communicator with a pragmatic and cooperative mindset.

Applicants do not have to be equally skilled in frontend and backend areas; strong backend engineers comfortable with frontend changes, or frontend specialists familiar with backend integration are both welcomed. The key is a willingness to cross traditional boundaries to deliver optimal outcomes.

Desirable Additional Skills

• Experience with merchant-facing or internal operational software.
• Hands-on familiarity with analytics, recommendations, or decision-support systems.
• Knowledge of grocery, retail, restaurant, logistics, or marketplace domains.
• Experience integrating external business applications.
• Working knowledge of Kafka or similar streaming platforms.
• Exposure to cloud infrastructure tools such as AWS, Kubernetes, or Docker.
