Overview
Alberta Health Services seeks a reliable, motivated individual for the role of Environmental Services Cleaner/Housekeeper at the University of Alberta Hospital. This temporary full-time position emphasizes high standards of safety and quality. Responsibilities include routine cleaning following isolation protocols, disinfecting patient rooms, clinical and common areas, maintaining floors and assigned medical equipment, daily manual material handling, and other facility-related cleaning tasks in compliance with AHS policies. The role involves frequent interaction with patients, staff, and visitors, and it includes performing deep cleaning and operating powered industrial equipment as necessary to ensure a safe, sanitary hospital environment.
Key Duties
- Cleaning and disinfecting clinical and non-clinical areas within healthcare settings
- Sweeping, mopping, vacuuming floors and restocking bathroom supplies
- Changing linens and making beds
- Operating industrial floor maintenance equipment and performing detailed cleaning of ceilings and windows
- Safely disposing of hazardous waste
- Replenishing cleaning materials and linens
- Identifying and reporting hazards to supervisors
- Providing orientation or training to other Environmental or Laundry staff
Job Details
This position belongs to the Environmental Services Union (AUPE GSS Unit) and operates within the Linen & Environmental Services Program. The work schedule includes 7.75-hour shifts, with 10 shifts every two weeks including daytime and weekend shifts, and rotating days off. The temporary role runs from September 8, 2026, to September 15, 2027. Salary ranges from $22.58 to $24.68 per hour.
Required Qualifications
- Completion of Grade 10 or equivalent education
- Basic computer and smartphone usage skills including email access
- Ability to stand, walk, and perform repetitive motions for long periods
- Physical capacity to lift up to 25 pounds and push or pull up to 50 pounds
- Capability to follow written and spoken instructions in English
- Dependability and ability to work independently with minimal supervision
- Experience handling chemical cleaners safely
- Experience operating powered industrial cleaning equipment
- Completion of a 4-day Environmental Services Orientation and 1-day AHS Orientation upon hire
Preferred Qualifications
- At least one year of hospital or institutional environmental cleaning experience
- Customer service experience of one year or more
- Knowledge of Workplace Hazardous Materials Information Systems (WHMIS)
- Training in ergonomics and workplace health and safety
- Experience with industrial cleaning equipment like auto-scrubbers and burnishers
- Skills in floor refinishing such as stripping and waxing
