About the Role
Join Gallagher as an Engineering Manager to spearhead the hardware engineering team developing innovative technology that is reshaping livestock farming. Located in Hamilton, New Zealand, you will lead the design, development, and ongoing enhancement of rugged hardware that supports Gallagher's pioneering eShepherd virtual fencing system, trusted globally for improving livestock management, productivity, and sustainability.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and mentor a skilled team of electronics and mechanical engineers throughout the entire product lifecycle, from concept to production and field support.
- Oversee hardware product design, architecture definition, testing procedures, and implementation to ensure reliability and manufacturability.
- Manage hardware-related risks by coordinating mitigation strategies and resolving issues.
- Facilitate design reviews, change management processes, Design for Manufacture and Assembly (DFMA), and Failure Modes and Effects Analysis (FMEA) reviews.
- Collaborate closely with IoT, embedded systems, cloud and applications teams on system architecture, subsystems, and workflows.
- Coordinate laboratory and field testing of IoT hardware prototypes.
- Support product strategy development, roadmap planning, and intellectual property activities.
- Promote Learning First Product Development methodologies, A3 thinking, and continuous improvement practices.
- Work alongside Manufacturing, Production Engineering, Procurement, Compliance, Customer Success teams, and external suppliers to achieve product excellence.
Required Qualifications and Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or an equivalent qualification.
- More than 5 years of experience in product development involving complex hardware, electronics, mechanical systems, IoT devices, or connected technologies.
- Proficient in interpreting requirements, defining architecture, performing technical risk analysis, functional and reliability testing.
- In-depth knowledge of electronic components, sensors, integrated circuits, and printed circuit board (PCB) design software.
- Experience with mechanical and electronic assemblies, CAD applications, and manufacturing processes.
- Proven leadership capabilities managing projects or teams to deliver significant outcomes.
- Strong communication and stakeholder engagement skills with a collaborative approach.
- A mindset geared toward continuous improvement and a strong sense of customer empathy.
Knowledge or experience in AgTech, embedded hardware, low-power electronics, ruggedized devices, wireless communication technologies, product validation, or design for manufacturing is considered advantageous.
