Director of Software Engineering - Workforce Experience Technology

Overview

We are seeking an experienced software engineering leader to spearhead a critical product-aligned engineering organization focused on the Workforce Experience Technology (WxT) at JPMorganChase. This role helms the development and operation of a secure, scalable, cloud-native Talent Performance platform that supports the bank's career management services used globally.

Key Responsibilities

• Define the engineering vision and oversee roadmap delivery balancing usability, speed, reliability, and compliance requirements.
• Lead several cross-functional teams spanning full stack, backend services, platform engineering, and site reliability/operations, managing staffing, coaching, and succession planning.
• Drive architectural modernization leveraging cloud-native patterns, domain-driven design, API and event strategies, and reusable capabilities.
• Ensure complete responsibility for product delivery, production stability, incident oversight, reliability metrics, monitoring, cost control, and continuous enhancement.
• Manage integration with HR systems including workforce and compensation platforms, identity/access controls, analytics tools, and third-party SaaS products with robust data contracts.
• Implement engineering governance such as secure coding guidelines, architecture reviews, SDLC processes, change control, audit preparedness, and measurable KPIs related to system availability, latency, defect rates, lead times, and cost efficiency.
• Collaborate with product, user experience, HR partners, and senior stakeholders to translate strategic goals into tangible results and practical solutions.
• Oversee third-party technology vendors ensuring technical suitability, security, delivery, and operational responsibilities, in coordination with sourcing and product teams.
• Promote an inclusive, accountable engineering culture that values high standards and ongoing learning, including responsible AI-assisted software development with adequate safeguards.
• Lead direction on AI-enabled automation and agentic AI tools in engineering workflows to improve deployment speed, quality, and operational performance, setting validation and security guardrails.
• Leverage enterprise software development lifecycle tools, including AI-assisted development, to maximize automation value and scale capacity unlock initiatives.

Required Qualifications and Skills

• Formal education or certification in software engineering coupled with substantial leadership experience managing complex technical domains and teams.
• Practical full-stack engineering skills with modern technologies such as React and TypeScript, and familiarity with enterprise design systems.
• Hands-on experience implementing large-scale graph databases like Neptune, Neo4J, or TigerGraph in production.
• Working knowledge of cloud-based relational databases such as PostgreSQL or Aurora and deep experience with cloud-native engineering principles on AWS or equivalent platforms focusing on security, reliability, cost, and SDLC automation.
• Expertise in backend development with Java and Spring Boot, and in designing and governing GraphQL and REST APIs, with exposure to distributed systems, microservices architecture, and complex integration.
• Strong fundamentals in security and data management, including OAuth2/OIDC and securing service-to-service communication.
• A proven record of leading the delivery and operational excellence of mission-critical, high-availability platforms with transparent outcome metrics.
• Exceptional ability to influence and align business, product, and technology leadership, and experience building and mentoring diverse, high-performing engineering teams.
• Practical understanding of engineering controls relating to identity and access management, data privacy, secure SDLC, vulnerability remediation, and audit compliance.
• Experience driving the adoption of AI-augmented engineering practices, establishing quality gates, operating standards, and secure handling of sensitive AI inputs and outputs.
• Solid awareness of responsible AI implementation, including governance frameworks for data sensitivity, security, resiliency, and broad organizational impact.

Preferred Qualifications

• Knowledge of HR technology systems and talent management workflows.
• Experience integrating HR and talent platforms with enterprise HR suites such as Oracle HCM and vendor ecosystems.
• Familiarity with event-driven architectures using Kafka/MSK and operational patterns such as schema evolution, idempotency, and dead-letter queue management.
• Strong platform engineering skills including CI/CD pipelines, automated testing, infrastructure as code tools (Terraform, CloudFormation, CDK), container orchestration (ECS/EKS), and establishing standards for services, APIs, and SLOs.
• Experience in establishing responsible AI-assisted engineering practices ensuring secure and productivity-enhancing usage.
