Director of Research & Development (Remote)

Overview

Harris Computer is searching for a Director of Research & Development to join their team remotely from anywhere in Canada or the US. The role involves occasional travel, approximately 1 to 2 trips per year, to South Korea. Applicants must have a valid passport and be able to undertake international travel, either through visa exemptions or possessing necessary travel visas. Preference will be given to candidates who can align their working hours with the Korean Standard Time zone. Bilingual proficiency in English and Korean is required.

Role Expectations & Responsibilities

• Lead and provide strategic technical direction across product development and support services organization-wide.
• Define and monitor KPIs and other performance metrics for R&D projects, reporting results regularly to senior leadership.
• Take ownership of the technology roadmap that directs product development strategy.
• Manage resource distribution including budgeting, personnel deployment, and infrastructure utilization.
• Mentor, coach, and manage members of the R&D team.
• Oversee comprehensive project management from initial planning to final delivery.
• Coordinate efforts across multiple functional teams to ensure consistent alignment on project scope, timelines, risks, and dependencies.
• Lead R&D activity planning, progress tracking, risk assessment, and regular reporting.
• Serve as the main communication bridge between R&D and executive management.
• Shape R&D strategies and objectives that correspond with business priorities to foster innovation within software development.
• Collaborate with financial operations regarding department budgeting, forecasts, and ensuring positive ROI on projects.

Required Qualifications & Experience

• Bachelor’s degree or Diploma in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related discipline, or equivalent professional experience.
• Over 10 years of experience in software development.
• More than 5 years in project or program management roles.
• At least 3 years in leadership or managerial positions.
• Fluent bilingual capabilities in English and Korean.
• Strong problem-solving, decision-making, and multi-project prioritizing skills.
• Proven track record of managing personnel and directing cross-functional teams.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills, capable of conveying intricate technical concepts to diverse stakeholders.
• Ability to balance responsibilities between delivery outcomes and people management.
• Willingness and flexibility to travel for necessary on-site visits to R&D offices.

Compensation & Benefits

• Annual salary ranging between 100,000 to 140,000 CAD.
