Position Overview

The Data Analyst position is dedicated to managing and supporting clinical and research data related to the Integrated Chronic Care Clinic (IC3) Decentralization project in Neno District, Malawi. This role involves comprehensive data handling through tools such as CommCare, DHIS2, electronic medical records (EMR), Microsoft Excel, and paper-based methods. The analyst will collaborate with APZU’s Monitoring, Evaluation, Informatics, and Research teams, alongside district health management and project stakeholders, to ensure data accuracy and effectiveness in project assessment.

Roles and Responsibilities

  • Design and implement data collection systems tailored for IC3 decentralization, developing all necessary digital, electronic, and physical forms.
  • Supervise the data collection and reporting workflows, managing and mentoring data clerks and psychosocial counselors involved in data activities.
  • Maintain superior data quality across platforms like CommCare, DHIS2, and EMR, ensuring integrity and completeness.
  • Alert relevant APZU and Ministry of Health personnel regarding data issues to support continuous quality improvement.
  • Produce analytical reports, manuscripts, and presentations suited for internal stakeholders, the Ministry of Health, and donors.
  • Collaborate with the informatics team to develop and maintain automated databases, Power BI dashboards, and reporting pipelines.
  • Provide expert advice on study design, data collection tools, and analytical methods in conjunction with the Research Department.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned, including frequent travel within Neno District for on-site data oversight.

Candidate Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Statistics, Economics, Monitoring and Evaluation, Data Science, Computer Science, Epidemiology, or related fields.
  • At least three years’ experience with tablet-based data collection solutions such as CommCare or ODK.
  • Minimum three years’ experience working with data from electronic medical records systems.
  • Five or more years managing, analyzing, and presenting data using Microsoft Excel and PowerPoint.
  • Proven leadership in guiding data collection teams and conducting quality assurance and improvement activities.
  • Expertise in survey design and both quantitative and qualitative data analysis, alongside program management skills.
  • Familiarity with mental health data management is advantageous.
  • Experience or familiarity with analytical tools such as Stata, Python, R, Power BI, Tableau, or SAS is a plus.
  • Fluency in Chichewa and English, with strong written English skills; Malawian nationals preferred.
  • Commitment to residing full time in rural Neno District with willingness to travel locally and acquire motorbike driving skills for fieldwork.
  • Capability to operate effectively with minimal supervision and collaborate across diverse health and support staff.
  • Strong interest in social medicine, with a comprehensive approach to health that integrates clinical, social, and public health perspectives.

Additional Information

Work hours are 40 per week with full-time onsite commitment. The role reports directly to the Monitoring and Evaluation Manager with secondary reporting to the M&E Research, Informatics, and IT Director. The position is based primarily at Upper Neno but requires district-wide travel for monitoring purposes.
