Head Janitor

Position Summary

The Head Janitor at Koidu Government Hospital (KGH) and Maternal Center of Excellence (MCOE) in Sierra Leone is tasked with managing and supervising housekeeping and cleaning duties while actively participating in daily tasks. This role ensures all patient, caregiver, and staff areas maintain cleanliness and hygiene in compliance with PIH and Ministry of Health standards.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

• Lead, instruct, and support a team of janitors to achieve high productivity and quality work standards.
• Develop work schedules, assign daily cleaning tasks, and oversee team performance.
• Conduct routine inspections to verify adherence to cleanliness and hygiene protocols.
• Participate in cleaning activities including floors, windows, restrooms, and common areas with heavy foot traffic.
• Maintain cleaning tools and equipment in proper working condition.
• Handle demanding cleaning situations such as biohazard disposal, spill management, and stain removal.
• Monitor and control inventory of cleaning supplies, placing orders to ensure timely restocking while maintaining cost efficiency.
• Enforce health and safety regulations, particularly the correct use of chemicals and personal protective equipment (PPE).
• Organize ongoing safety training sessions and promptly identify and resolve safety hazards.
• Coordinate with hospital management and other departments to meet specific cleaning requirements.
• Respond swiftly to requests for special cleaning or maintenance tasks.
• Prepare and submit reports regarding team output, challenges, and achievements.
• Perform additional operational duties as assigned to support departmental objectives and teamwork.

Required Qualifications and Experience

• Strong self-motivation with a commitment to teamwork and humanitarian values.
• Flexible, eager to learn, and enthusiastic about the role.
• Disciplined and serious approach to janitorial responsibilities.
• Physical stamina to endure extended working hours and high-pressure environments.
• Familiarity with hospital hygiene and infection prevention and control (IPC) procedures is advantageous.
• Technical Certificate with specialization in hygiene and sanitation preferred.
• At least 2 years experience as Head Janitor or similar role within healthcare settings in collaboration with Sierra Leone’s Ministry of Health.
• Comprehensive knowledge of IPC practices and national sanitation protocols.
• Excellent communication skills and ability to mentor a team of semi-skilled workers.
• Willingness to work on-site in rural healthcare facilities.
• Proficient in Krio language; English skills are a plus.
• Demonstrated interest in social justice and healthcare accessibility, especially for the impoverished.

Preferred Qualifications

• WASSCE certificate.
• Certification in environmental health or Infection Prevention and Control (IPC) is an advantage.
• Experience in implementing environmental cleaning and waste management protocols and supervising service teams.
• Track record of enhancing compliance with Ministry of Health sanitation standards.
