Role Overview
As a Critical Environment Technician within Microsoft's Cloud Operations & Innovation division, you will be instrumental in ensuring the continued operation of critical infrastructure at our data centers. This role involves collaborating with suppliers and vendors, identifying safe and unsafe conditions on site, maintaining and troubleshooting critical environment systems, responding promptly to onsite incidents alongside fellow facility experts, and utilizing telemetry and other monitoring platforms to oversee equipment functionality. This position is fully onsite at one of Microsoft's Auckland Data Centers.

Key Responsibilities
- Specialize independently in one main area of critical environment operations, such as electrical systems, mechanical equipment, controls, or generators.
- Conduct regular inspections of critical environment facility equipment, buildings, and grounds for unsafe or irregular conditions, escalating concerns per company policy.
- Use an internal computerized maintenance management system (CMMS) to log and manage equipment assets and maintenance requests.
- Lead rapid and safe incident responses to abnormal operational events onsite, collaborating with facilities professionals to perform corrective actions independently.
- Develop and refine emergency operating procedures, methods of procedure, and standard operating procedures relevant to critical environment operations and incident management.
- Perform various maintenance activities including planned, predictive, and corrective repairs according to established procedures on equipment such as electrical, mechanical, and cooling systems.
- Possess hands-on troubleshooting skills to diagnose and resolve issues with systems, subsystems, and components within your trained discipline.
- Provide guidance and consultation to junior colleagues for troubleshooting challenges.
- Uphold safety and security protocols, including job hazard assessments, environmental health and safety standards, and business processes, ensuring quality and reliability in all work.

Candidate Qualifications
- Minimum of a High School Diploma, GED, or equivalent qualification coupled with at least one year of experience in mission-critical service environments, such as data centers, manufacturing, oil and gas refineries, hospitals, pharmaceutical, or similar sectors involving maintenance and troubleshooting of electrical, controls, HVAC, and mechanical systems.
- Applicants with comparable industry experience will also be considered.
- Must be able to work various shifts including evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays.
- Applicants must be either New Zealand citizens with a New Zealand passport or hold New Zealand permanent residency, to meet security screening requirements.
- Successful candidate must clear Microsoft's cloud background check upon hiring and every two years thereafter.
Preferred Experience
- A High School Diploma or equivalent plus 3+ years of mission-critical service industry experience in environments like data centers, oil and gas, hospitals, or manufacturing with a focus on electrical, controls, HVAC, or mechanical maintenance and troubleshooting.
- Alternatively, an Associate’s Degree, technical certification, or higher education combined with 3+ years relevant industry experience is preferred.
