Overview
Join Microsoft as a Data Center Technician (DCT) based fully onsite in Sydney's West. This role involves assembling, setting up, and deploying hardware within one of our globally renowned data centers. You'll handle troubleshooting and diagnostics on equipment and conduct hardware decommissions during routine changes and refreshes, all while strictly following Standard Operating Procedures. This position offers the opportunity to expand your knowledge of data center standard operations, develop mentorship competencies by guiding colleagues, and familiarize yourself with key security and data management protocols—fast-tracking your career development.
You'll be part of Microsoft’s Cloud Operations & Innovation (CO+I) team, instrumental in maintaining the infrastructure supporting Microsoft's vast online services such as Bing, Office 365, Xbox, OneDrive, and Azure. Our global network includes over 200 data centers in 32 countries, handling millions of servers to serve over a billion customers and millions of businesses worldwide. With a focus on sustainability and efficiency, our data centers are designed and operated to meet evolving business demands, embodying Microsoft's mission to empower every individual and organization globally.
Key Duties
- Execute hardware diagnostics and troubleshoot issues promptly using established protocols, ensuring minimal disruption to clients and business operations.
- Perform quality assurance after tasks, confirming proper grounding, staging, labeling, and cabling adhere to safety standards and network design plans.
- Manage hardware decommissioning for simple updates like memory upgrades or rebuilds, relying on standard procedures with occasional oversight.
- Communicate effectively by reporting and escalating incidents to data center operations leadership, Technician Leads, and engineering experts as necessary.
- Support and mentor fellow technicians, assisting with complex or challenging projects.
- Engage in required training and gain hands-on experience through observation and practical learning alongside seasoned technicians.
- Promote a collaborative team environment by sharing knowledge, participating in meetings, and being informed of colleagues' work status.
- Demonstrate pride and responsibility for service quality and user experience, valuing ownership of data center facility outcomes.

Qualifications
- Minimum education: High School Diploma, GED, TAFE or equivalent.
- At least one year of relevant industry experience supporting IT hardware or related technologies.
- Willingness to work in shifts, including evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays as required.
- Ability to clear Microsoft Cloud Background Checks and comply with Australian government security screening, including citizenship verification and possible NV1/2 or PV clearance assessments.
Preferred qualifications (not mandatory):
- Two or more years of experience supporting IT equipment or related tech industries.
- Recognized certifications such as CompTIA A+, Server+, Network+, or Basic Structure Cabling (BSC).
