Consultant Gastroenterology

Job Overview

The Consultant in Gastroenterology is responsible for delivering comprehensive care to both inpatient and outpatient cases. This role demands strict adherence to evidence-based practices, ethical standards, accreditation requirements including CBAHI and JCIA, hospital medical bylaws, and Saudi Ministry of Health regulations. The consultant is expected to exercise leadership within the department by implementing and monitoring quality improvement initiatives specific to gastroenterology.

Core Responsibilities

• Ensure the highest quality of medical care, compassion, and understanding to every patient within the hospital and clinics.
• Provide medical services within the scope of clinical privileges to both inpatients and outpatients.
• Operate following validated clinical standards, guidelines, and criteria.
• Conduct ward rounds independently or as part of a team to develop multidisciplinary treatment plans.
• Perform diagnostic and therapeutic procedures pertinent to gastroenterology.
• Evaluate patients under care and coordinate referrals to other medical facilities when necessary, also accepting relevant patient referrals.
• Participate actively in the department's on-call schedule for patient care and admissions.
• Respond promptly to emergencies that fall within the specialty.
• Uphold patient rights, including confidentiality, privacy, and security.
• Maintain comprehensive and timely medical records for all patients.
• Lead departmental initiatives and supervise junior medical staff.
• Drive performance improvement activities encompassing clinical and non-clinical processes aligned with the department's quality objectives.
• Engage in continuous medical education via hospital programs, national and international conferences, case studies, and research activities.
• Contribute to training programs for junior medical staff, nursing and technical personnel.
• Continuously update professional knowledge and clinical skills in gastroenterology.
• Participate actively in committee meetings such as Quality Improvement and Infection Control.
• Comply strictly with departmental policies, hospital bylaws, and relevant rules and regulations.
• Educate patients and their families according to assessed needs, ensuring inclusion in care planning and respect for their preferences and goals.
• Provide health promotion and education tailored to patients’ developmental stages, cultural backgrounds, language, and readiness to learn; document all educational interactions appropriately.
• Perform all other duties as assigned by hospital administration or department leadership within the scope of expertise.

Reporting Relationships

Reports directly to the Head of the Department of Internal Medicine. Collaborates with consultants across specialties, nursing teams, other healthcare staff, patients, and their families. Oversees senior registrars, registrars, residents, nurses, and paramedical personnel assigned.

Qualifications & Experience

• Possession of Saudi Board, American Board, Canadian Fellowship, MRCP, or an equivalent certification.
• A minimum of five years’ post-qualification experience.
• Valid medical license for practice in permanent residence location.
• Registration with the Saudi Commission for Health Specialties and/or current license to practice medicine in Saudi Arabia.
• Preferred qualifications include additional subspecialty experience and academic affiliations.

Skills and Competencies

• Proven leadership and administrative capabilities.
• Fluent in both written and spoken English; Arabic communication skills are advantageous.
• Demonstrates professional behavior with excellent interpersonal communication skills.
• Familiarity with relevant medical bylaws.
