Their duties include investigating and observing the quality of services provided at various visitable sites, ensuring that the rights and interests of these individuals are protected.

Workplace Overview

The Office of the Public Guardian (OPG) is an independent statutory body dedicated to safeguarding adults with impaired decision-making capacity, as well as children and young people involved with child protection and other designated locations.

Key Responsibilities

  • Evaluate whether children, young people, and adults are adequately informed about their rights during visits.
  • Identify and address issues affecting individuals by actively seeking their opinions, making observations, conducting inquiries, or examining site documentation.
  • Serve as advocates to assist individuals in resolving concerns, engaging in decision-making, and lodging or referring complaints.
  • Exhibit a comprehensive understanding of the legislative and regulatory requirements that govern service delivery to visited individuals.
  • Utilize strong interpersonal abilities to quickly build trust with diverse populations, maintain professionalism, and demonstrate resilience.
  • Possess proficient written and oral communication skills, including the capability to produce reports and utilize information technology effectively.
  • Adhere strictly to confidentiality, privacy, and information-sharing protocols when accessing or disseminating data.
  • Keep accurate and prompt records consistent with record-keeping standards and corporate governance.
  • Participate actively in training sessions, team meetings, supervision, and ongoing professional development.

Mandatory Role Conditions

  • Applicants must hold a current Working with Children Check (Blue Card). If not already possessed, OPG will assist with the application process.
  • Must have a valid unrestricted driver's license and access to a roadworthy vehicle insured under comprehensive or third-party property damage coverage. The insurance must include an endorsement protecting the employer against liabilities arising from official vehicle use.
