Job description
Overview
We are looking for a Senior Mechanical Commissioning Engineer to lead and manage the commissioning strategy for advanced liquid-cooled mechanical systems in next-generation data centres. This position is part of a centralized commissioning team responsible for establishing commissioning methodologies, creating procedures, and ensuring consistent, high-quality execution across various regional sites.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop and take ownership of the mechanical commissioning strategy specifically for liquid-cooled data centre technologies.
- Define the overarching commissioning philosophy, test levels ranging from L1 to L5, hold points during testing, and the acceptance criteria.
- Provide input on design aspects to ensure commissioning considerations are integrated early in design and product development stages.
- Serve as the ultimate technical authority for resolving mechanical commissioning issues and managing associated risks.
- Oversee systems including Direct-to-Chip liquid cooling, Coolant Distribution Units, secondary heat rejection (dry coolers, chillers, plate heat exchangers), pumps, valves, pipework, filtration, water treatment, leak detection and containment, and integration with IT thermal loads and controls.
- Create and maintain vital documentation such as mechanical commissioning plans, pre-commissioning and flushing procedures, pressure and leak testing protocols, thermal performance and load validation scripts, and define clear measurable success criteria for all mechanical systems.
- Govern and supervise regional mechanical commissioning teams, ensuring compliance with the established strategies and standards through audits.
- Attend and witness Factory Acceptance Tests, Site Acceptance Tests, and other crucial site tests.
- Assist regional teams with troubleshooting and complex system tuning when needed.
- Work closely with electrical and control leads during Integrated Systems Testing, failure-mode, and redundancy testing phases.
- Support client demonstrations and ensure a smooth and formal handover process, confirming systems are ready for live IT load deployment.
Candidate Profile
- More than 10 years of experience in mechanical commissioning within mission-critical facilities.
- Proven track record commissioning liquid-cooled data centre systems.
- Sound knowledge of hydronic system design and commissioning, alongside control systems including BMS and PLC interactions.
- Experience with redundancy and failure-mode analyses.
- Demonstrated ability to work with regional teams across multiple geographies.
- Relevant engineering degree, preferably in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent.
- Ability to remain calm and authoritative in high-pressure scenarios.
- Strong skills in technical documentation.
- Focused on practical and result-driven approaches to commissioning.
- Prepared to travel to support Factory Acceptance Tests and critical onsite activities.
- Committed to challenging unsafe or non-compliant commissioning procedures when encountered.
