Job description

Overview

We are offering a permanent, full-time Caretaker position at MEA Central school in Manchester, working 35 hours weekly throughout the year. The starting salary is £25,583 under Grade 3, and the appointment is subject to successful pre-employment checks.

Role Summary

The successful Caretaker will become part of the school’s site team and contribute to maintaining a secure, clean, and well-kept environment that promotes a positive atmosphere for students, staff, and visitors alike. Reporting to the Site Manager, the role involves various caretaking, maintenance, and safety tasks essential for daily school operations.

Responsibilities

  • Perform general maintenance and minor repairs on school premises.
  • Ensure cleanliness and upkeep of buildings and outdoor areas.
  • Open and lock the school grounds, serving as a keyholder as needed.
  • Conduct routine health and safety inspections, identifying and reporting any issues.
  • Assist with testing fire alarms and other mandatory safety checks, keeping accurate documentation.
  • Carry out grounds maintenance including litter collection, bin emptying, and clearing pathways during unfavorable weather conditions.
  • Prepare rooms by arranging furniture and equipment for various school activities such as meetings and examinations.
  • Support the transport of furniture and deliveries within the school.
  • Respond promptly to emergency cleaning or maintenance situations.
  • Monitor and report site supply levels for timely replenishment.
  • Adhere to health and safety policies, including COSHH regulations.
  • Coordinate with contractors on site and escalate concerns to the Site Manager.
  • Perform additional duties relevant to the role as instructed by the Site Manager or Headteacher.

Candidate Profile

  • Possesses practical skills in maintenance and do-it-yourself tasks.
  • Demonstrates proficiency in literacy and numeracy.
  • Understands workplace health and safety requirements.
  • Works effectively both independently and collaboratively within a team.
  • Communicates well and maintains a positive, adaptable attitude.
  • Capable of handling the physical responsibilities of the position.
  • Experience in caretaking, maintenance, or facilities roles is preferred.
  • Experience in a school or similar environment is advantageous.
