Job Overview

The Building Supervisor role involves undertaking both cleaning and maintenance-related tasks within school premises, operating with no direct supervision, and following designated procedures set by the Education Authority.

Key Responsibilities

  • Secure the school premises and grounds, including meal areas, by managing entry points, windows, doors, gates, and maintaining key custody and distribution.
  • Operate and oversee security systems such as fire alarms, burglar alarms, and CCTV, reporting any faults.
  • Respond promptly to after-hours security incidents, ensuring the premises are safe, clean, and any damage reported.
  • Apply grit or rock salt during icy conditions to maintain safe access routes.
  • Operate and maintain heating and boiler systems efficiently, monitor consumption of fuel, water, and electricity, and ensure timely requisition of supplies.
  • Carry out routine maintenance tasks including replacing light fittings up to 3.35 meters and inspecting fire-fighting equipment.
  • Manage chemical dosing and upkeep of swimming or hydrotherapy pools if applicable.
  • Clean the majority of school premises, excluding areas dedicated solely for school meals; oversee cleaning staff work quality where applicable and undertake cleaning duties personally.
  • Organize cleaning schedules in consultation with users and improve procedures for better efficiency and standards.
  • Maintain cleanliness of external grounds, drains, gullies, bins, and various fixtures, ensuring timely waste disposal and replenishment of hygiene supplies.
  • Handle porterage duties such as receiving, distributing, and dispatching goods, setting up rooms for exams and activities, and managing refuse transport.
  • Maintain comprehensive administrative records related to cleaning, maintenance defects, contractor work, staff attendance, and inventory management.
  • Perform handyperson tasks within personal competence levels.
  • Adhere to all statutory health and safety legislation, COSHH regulations, and codes of practice relevant to the role.
  • Participate in training for current duties and potential higher responsibilities; deliver staff induction and refresher training as needed.
  • Fulfill duties during school elections as determined by governing committees.

Candidate Requirements

  • Minimum six months’ experience in a role aligned with main duties, demonstrating competency in building supervision and related responsibilities.
  • Availability to respond as a key holder for urgent call-outs, including unsociable hours.
  • Knowledge of school building supervision requirements, safety regulations, manual handling, and security system operation.
  • Strong team collaboration, communication, administrative, planning, and decision-making skills.
  • Alignment with the school’s values and ethos.

Desirable Qualifications and Experience

  • Experience holding keys, managing premises opening and closing, and setting alarm systems.
  • NEBOSH Health and Safety at Work certification or equivalent/higher qualification.
