Biosecurity Auditor

Overview

The Ministry for Primary Industries invites applications for a permanent, full-time Biosecurity Auditor role based in Auckland (Māngere) within the North region. The position supports New Zealand's border biosecurity by auditing and monitoring the Biosecurity New Zealand verification programs under the Biosecurity Act 1993. The salary band for this role is General Salary Range D, ranging from $102,953 to $111,079 annually, depending on skills and experience.

Role and Key Responsibilities

In this critical role, you will conduct audits and evaluations of border verification programmes, including Transitional Facilities, Grain Import Systems, Places of First Arrival, and the Recognised Cruise Line Programme. Your duties will involve pre-approval assessments of businesses and operators, undertaking investigations, and performing unannounced audits when necessary. This work helps minimize the risk of pests and diseases affecting New Zealand’s primary industries and supports trade assurances vital to the country's economy and wellbeing.

The main activities include:

• Planning and executing audits, coordinating audit schedules, engaging with senior management, preparing audit reports, and participating in peer reviews and calibration exercises.
• Ensuring compliance by verifying processes and operators adhere to relevant standards, systems, and procedures as per the Biosecurity Act 1993, including follow-up on critical non-compliances.
• Maintaining accurate biosecurity data records and reports.

Candidate Profile and Experience

An ideal candidate will be an experienced auditor or a professional with a background in risk, assurance, or compliance, capable of working independently and collaboratively within a team. Essential qualities include resilience, strong communication skills (both verbal and written), effective relationship management, and sound, evidence-based decision-making skills.

Qualifications and Skills

• A recognized qualification or extensive experience in auditing, compliance, or risk and assurance fields is required.
• Demonstrated ability to manage internal and external stakeholder relationships and build professional networks.
• Proficiency with standards such as ISO 17020 and familiarity with duties as an authorized signatory.
• Experience conducting thorough audits, gathering and assessing objective evidence, and ensuring rectifications of non-compliance are implemented.
• Knowledge of biosecurity legislation and specific sector standards is advantageous.
• A valid New Zealand driver's license and willingness to travel domestically are mandatory.

Additional Requirements and Conditions

Candidates must successfully complete a comprehensive training program upon appointment.

As this is a safety-sensitive role, applicants will be subject to pre-employment drug and alcohol screening.
