Assistant Underwriter

About the Role

Suncorp New Zealand is seeking a commercially focused Assistant Underwriter to join our Business Distribution team based primarily in Christchurch. You will support the underwriting processes for both new and existing small to medium enterprise (SME) commercial accounts, playing an integral part in fostering sustainable, profitable growth while enhancing your underwriting expertise.

Key Responsibilities

• Make informed underwriting judgments aimed at profitable and sustainable business growth.
• Analyze and review existing SME commercial accounts to assist in renewal strategies.
• Provide quotes and assist in securing new SME commercial business ventures.
• Develop and maintain robust, meaningful relationships with intermediaries and business partners.
• Ensure seamless, efficient service delivery focused on positive outcomes for commercial clients and partners.
• Collaborate effectively within the wider Business team by sharing insights and driving results.
• Support ongoing initiatives related to digitisation, automation, and process improvements.

Candidate Profile

• Minimum of approximately 3 years' experience in commercial underwriting or within the wider commercial insurance sector.
• Sound understanding of the New Zealand commercial insurance landscape.
• Excellent interpersonal and relationship management skills, with proven ability to influence and negotiate.
• Strong customer-centric approach dedicated to delivering quality results.
• Good commercial awareness combined with knowledge of sales fundamentals.
• Ability to collaborate across various teams and stakeholder groups effectively.
• Demonstrated proactive mindset towards problem-solving, innovation, and continuous improvement.
• Relevant tertiary qualification or industry certifications will be positively regarded.
