Overview

Key Responsibilities

  • Ensure customers experience a convenient and enjoyable shopping environment by promptly addressing project needs, acknowledging customers, resolving complaints, and maintaining appropriate stock levels.
  • Utilize the sales floor "racetrack" to proactively seek out and assist customers, coaching associates and department supervisors to do the same.
  • Plan and maintain adequate staffing schedules to fulfill customer demand across all areas of responsibility.
  • Train associates to deliver high-quality customer service.
  • Coordinate and communicate store events and promotions efficiently.
  • Oversee customer satisfaction specifically related to special orders and installations.
  • Recruit and assign sales associates with relevant expertise—such as technical knowledge and closing abilities—to special order and installation roles.
  • Ensure specialty departments including Flooring, Kitchen, Appliance, Millwork & Decor have sufficient staffing for both appointments and immediate customer needs.
  • Set and monitor department sales targets consistently.
  • Participate in recruiting efforts, interviewing applicants, and advising the store manager regarding hiring decisions.
  • Recommend employee actions such as terminations, promotions, demotions, starting pay rates, and performance-based compensation adjustments.
  • Drive sales floor productivity by balancing associate numbers with customer volume.
  • Clearly communicate store and corporate objectives to associates.
  • Provide coaching, training, and career development guidance through formal and informal feedback mechanisms.
  • Implement strategies to reduce employee turnover in customer service areas.
  • Lead the Chalk Talk process to review and communicate store sales, events, and promotions, focusing on customer service associates.
  • Assess training needs related to sales, product knowledge, processes, and customer service skills; develop improvement plans accordingly.
  • Maintain thorough knowledge of Home Depot programs and services and effectively convey these to customers and associates.
  • Train associates on sales and inventory reports tied to Key Performance Indicators for departments and the store.
  • Analyze profitability and performance reports to identify trends and resolve issues within departments and across the store.
  • Develop and enforce store standards for customer service.
  • Collaborate with the store manager and fellow assistants to plan and respond to seasonal changes, events, and problem-solving initiatives.
  • Ensure daily inspections are completed and follow up on safety audits, accident reporting, and investigations.
  • Promote and participate actively in safety awareness programs under company guidelines.
  • Verify financial and operational transactions such as deposits, markdowns, deliveries, timesheets, and refunds.
  • Adhere to company procedures for store opening and closing when scheduled.
  • Respond appropriately to emergency situations as they arise.
  • Perform additional related duties as assigned by the store manager.

Experience and Qualifications

  • A minimum of one year in the current position with appropriate performance status (V2 – Valued Associate, Well Positioned).
  • At least two years of management experience.
  • Exceptional customer service skills.
  • Effective communication skills.
  • Proficiency with computer systems is required.
  • Strong analytical abilities and proficiency in problem solving.
  • Proven teamwork and collaboration skills.
  • Possess a strong work ethic, responsibility, attention to detail, and maintain confidentiality.
