Job description
About the Role
Transpower New Zealand is dedicated to powering the country's energy future by supporting a net-zero carbon economy and maintaining a dependable, secure electricity grid. Our Grid Development division shapes New Zealand's transmission network by integrating strategy, planning, engineering, and governance to sustain a reliable national grid that meets long-term energy demands.
The Asset Planning Group Manager is responsible for leading the Asset Planning team, developing and continuously improving Transpower’s Asset Management Plan and related planning deliverables. By collaborating across internal and external stakeholders, this role ensures asset planning is credible, integrated, and supports value-driven investment and regulatory submissions.
Key Responsibilities
- Manage and enhance the Asset Management Plan, including maturity frameworks and planning practices, ensuring these are embedded into investment decision processes.
- Lead transparent, robust asset planning contributions to regulatory submissions and planning documents.
- Define asset-related challenges, risks, and opportunities to enable prioritized, value-based investments and effective governance progression.
- Integrate the asset planning perspective within Transpower’s broader planning systems, governance, and decision frameworks.
- Provide leadership and capability development for the asset planning team, overseeing budgets, performance management, and fostering an inclusive and collaborative culture.
Candidate Profile
The ideal candidate will have senior leadership experience managing technical or professional teams in asset management or integrated planning within complex asset-heavy environments. Strong systems thinking and sound judgment skills are essential for navigating ambiguous situations and balancing risk, cost, regulatory, and delivery considerations. Proven stakeholder engagement and influencing abilities, preferably within electricity transmission or regulated infrastructure, are highly valued.
Qualifications and Experience
- Demonstrated leadership in asset management, asset or investment planning, or similar fields involving technical team management.
- Track record in developing or improving asset management plans, maturity models, and integrated planning methodologies.
- Deep knowledge of asset lifecycle management, risk assessment, value-based investment decision-making, whole-of-life investment principles, and governance.
- Experience in preparing regulatory, investment, or business planning submissions based on solid analysis, transparent assumptions, and evidence.
- Ability to identify complex asset or network investment problems and translate them into actionable plans.
- Strong stakeholder relationship management with exposure to electricity transmission, distribution, or other regulated infrastructure sectors.
Additional Information
This leadership position offers an opportunity to contribute significantly to New Zealand’s energy infrastructure development. The role is located at several possible offices including Wellington (Waikoukou), Christchurch (Islington), and potentially Auckland (Ōtara) for suitable candidates. Transpower provides a stimulating environment with learning opportunities and extensive benefits covering health, wellbeing, and insurance.
Applications close on Tuesday, 1st September.
