Job description

Position Overview

Armour Officers in the Canadian Armed Forces lead armoured vehicle troops such as those operating Leopard main battle tanks or Light Armoured Vehicles. As integral members of the Combat Arms alongside Artillery, Infantry, and Combat Engineering regiments, they provide reconnaissance and direct fire support on the battlefield. Their responsibilities include managing troop training, maintaining morale and discipline, and ensuring combat and equipment readiness.

Role Details

An Armour Officer commands either a tank troop or a LAV troop within an Armoured Squadron. LAV Troop Leaders use stealth and advanced sensors to identify enemy positions and targets, while Tank Troop Leaders leverage mobility, protection, and firepower to engage and defeat the enemy using direct-fire systems.

Work Environment and Deployment

Armour Officers operate in diverse environments ranging from Arctic tundra to tropical jungles, deserts, mountains, or complex urban settings. Deployments include both international missions and domestic support to civil authorities during national emergencies. Initial postings are to one of three regiments: The Royal Canadian Dragoons (Petawawa, Ontario), Lord Strathcona’s Horse (Edmonton, Alberta), or the 12e Régiment blindé du Canada (Valcartier, Quebec).

Regular Force members may expect relocations throughout their careers, whereas Primary Reserve Force members serve part-time typically without relocation requirements, committing one night per week and some weekends, with opportunities for full-time assignments.

Entry and Training Pathways

  • Direct Entry: Applicants with a university degree may enter directly into required job-specific training after completing basic and officer qualification training.
  • Regular Officer Training Plan (ROTP): The CAF sponsors candidates to complete a university bachelor degree at the Royal Military College and provides full salary, benefits, and vacation in exchange for service commitment.

Training begins with a 12-week basic officer program covering military knowledge, leadership, regulations, weapons handling, first aid, physical fitness, and field exercises. This is followed by potential second language instruction lasting two to nine months depending on the trainee’s proficiency.

Armour Officers continue training at the Infantry School in Gagetown, New Brunswick, advancing combat arms skills, weapons handling, and tactics. They also attend the Armoured Troop Leaders Course at the Royal Canadian Armoured Corps School, focusing on crew command, communication, weapons firing, tactical maneuvers, and leadership techniques.

Specializations

  • Assault Troop Leader
  • Joint Tactical Airspace Controller
  • Chemical Biological Radiation and Nuclear Advisor
  • Technical Staff Officer

Part-Time Service (Primary Reserve)

Part-time Armour Officer roles within the Primary Reserve are available across Canada, allowing individuals to serve while pursuing education or civilian careers. These members train locally, receive pay during training, and are not obligated to relocate. Reserve training matches Regular Force standards, with specialized skill development arranged after basic officer training. Typical service commitments include weekly evening and weekend training with paid rates at 92.8% of Regular Force and access to benefits and pension plans.
