Job description

Overview

Ammunition Technicians serve as essential military personnel in the Canadian Armed Forces managing all aspects related to ammunition and explosive devices. Their responsibilities include overseeing CAF ammunition stockpiles, enforcing explosive safety protocols, conducting inspections, testing, maintenance, modifications, and destruction of ammunition and explosives.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide expert guidance on ammunition and explosives safety policies and practices.
  • Manage and supervise the storage, preparation, and shipment of ammunition and explosives.
  • Maintain static facilities and support field or deployed installations.
  • Execute render safe and disposal procedures for explosive ordnance.
  • Certify various ammunition and explosive items, including munitions and scrap, according to classification standards.
  • Perform disposal operations for improvised explosive devices.
  • Operate specialized equipment to support military operations.

Working Conditions

Technicians may be stationed in diverse environments, initially gaining experience at ammunition facilities before potential reassignment within Canada or deployment globally. Regular Force members should expect relocations during their career, while Primary Reserve Force members typically work part-time at specific reserve units without the obligation to move.

Entry Requirements and Training

No prior work experience is mandatory. Applicants should have completed the provincial education equivalent to Grade 10 or Secondary 4 in Quebec. Foreign education credentials may be considered. The training pathway begins with Basic Military Qualification at Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu, Quebec, focusing on core military skills and physical fitness.

Ammunition Technicians undergo approximately five months of specialized training at the Canadian Forces Logistics Training Centre in Borden, Ontario, learning identification, inventory, maintenance, and disposal of ammunition and explosives.

This is followed by three months of Explosive Ordnance Disposal training covering disposal of misfires, range clearance, defect investigation, and operational procedures. Lastly, an eight-week course focuses on safety programs, technical services, accident investigations, facility inspections, and duties related to ammunition administration.

On-the-Job Learning and Advanced Opportunities

After formal training, a 24-month practical placement provides hands-on experience within ammunition facilities. Skilled technicians may receive additional training in areas such as improvised explosive device disposal, hazardous goods transportation, biological or chemical munitions disposal, and marine explosive handling. Advanced courses, like Conventional Munitions Disposal, are available for further professional development.
