About Halter
Halter is dedicated to enabling farmers and graziers to achieve highly productive and sustainable agricultural operations by transforming traditional methods through cutting-edge technology. Our virtual fencing system allows cattle to move calmly and independently without the need for quad bikes, dogs, or physical fences, revolutionizing grazing and improving farmers' daily lives. Our team thrives on challenging problems and high performance, supported by top-tier investors. We are advancing virtual fencing technology to boost productivity, animal welfare, and sustainable farming practices worldwide.
Role Overview
We are seeking a passionate Data Analyst to join our virtual fencing research and development team. This position goes beyond standard data analysis by encompassing data engineering tasks and close collaboration with backend systems. The successful candidate will become deeply knowledgeable about virtual fencing technology and animal behavior, providing key insights to improve our products. The role is based primarily at our Auckland headquarters, with occasional travel to our R&D farm in Morrinsville.
Key Responsibilities
- Collaborate with a focused R&D group to enhance virtual fencing and animal movement technologies globally.
- Analyze and interpret data through hands-on query writing and statistical assessment.
- Spend time observing cattle behavior on-site to complement data-driven understanding.
- Manage the guidance data domain alongside the team’s other Data Analyst, driving insights, conducting trials, and identifying opportunities for innovation.
- Work with internal teams and external partners to support virtual fencing research.
Candidate Profile and Skills
- Strong curiosity and problem-solving skills; comfortable questioning assumptions and exploring beyond given scopes to ensure thorough analysis.
- Solid analytical and statistical expertise, including awareness of common biases and rigorous data validation.
- Proficiency in data-related tools such as SQL, Python, and R, with eagerness to expand into data engineering roles and backend engagement.
- Demonstrated quick learning ability and commitment to mastering new domains including animal behavior and internal systems.
- Excellent collaboration and communication skills, adaptable to various audiences both internally and externally.
- Proactive attitude with a preference for action in ambiguous situations, applying first principles to address challenges.
- Relevant experience in data analysis or a tertiary qualification in statistics or a related discipline.
- Genuine interest in agriculture and farming practices, with motivation to deeply understand and improve them.
Employee Benefits
- Access to tasty snacks and beverages at the workplace.
- Partnership with Southern Cross Health Insurance to support employee well-being.
- Generous parental leave allowances: 6 months fully paid for primary caregivers and 4 weeks fully paid for secondary caregivers, among additional family support.
- Annual personal development fund of $1000 to foster continuous learning and growth.
- Wellness leave and unlimited paid annual leave for work-life balance.
- Competitive remuneration package consisting of salary, benefits, and employee stock ownership.

We prioritize an office-first culture to foster social connection, learning, collaboration, and impactful teamwork. The office atmosphere is described as energetic and inspiring, offering an exceptional environment for growth and problem-solving. While the default arrangement is working from office, flexible work arrangements may be available when necessary, based on trust.
