Senior Data Scientist

Position Overview

Join MongoDB as a Senior Data Scientist within the Engineering Systems team to independently collaborate with engineers from Server Query, Atlas Clusters, Release Quality, and other teams. You will address challenges in resource scaling across the Atlas fleet, secure feature rollouts to MongoDB clusters, automate incident responses, and optimize query engine performance. This role involves researching, prototyping, and deploying machine learning solutions that enhance MongoDB's core server, query engine, and Atlas cloud database service.

Location and Work Mode

Preference is for candidates based in Dublin or Cork to support a hybrid working arrangement.

Key Responsibilities

• Collaborate with engineering teams to integrate algorithmic precision and optimization into resource scaling, release safety, and monitoring systems within the fleet and query engine.
• Develop production-grade, well-tested statistical and machine learning algorithms that effectively impact business outcomes beyond theoretical approaches.
• Manage the complete feedback cycle by instrumenting model architectures, tracking performance metrics, creating dashboards alongside the analytics team, gathering user and metric feedback, diagnosing issues or opportunities, and iterating improvements.
• Provide constructive code reviews and contribute foundational code, tools, and processes to boost developer efficiency.

Success Metrics

• Within 3 months: Acquire a foundational understanding of team workflows, products, and collaborative teams, and deliver small to medium improvements.
• Within 6 months: Independently research, prototype, and deliver a feature that demonstrates measurable improvements to business metrics.
• Within 12 months: Build a strong record of ML-driven enhancements in fleet stability, efficiency, or operational automation, deepen collaboration with multiple engineering teams, and become a trusted expert for statistical and engineering excellence across the team.

Required Skills and Attributes

• At least 5 years of experience in hands-on machine learning model development, working closely with technical stakeholders.
• Proven ability to autonomously manage the entire ML lifecycle including prototyping, simulation, tuning, and product iteration, both with and without engineering support.
• Strong object-oriented design skills in Python for building scalable and maintainable codebases, with experience collaborating on ML system architecture.
• Comfortable with reviewing and redesigning code originating from humans or AI across various codebases, primarily Python centered.
• Commitment to fostering a positive team culture by encouraging open communication and psychological safety in varied ways.
• Effective communicator capable of translating complex ML concepts into understandable business impact metrics for non-expert audiences.
• Possession of a Master's degree or equivalent in a quantitative or computational field such as computer science, applied mathematics, statistics, physics, or operations research.
