Role Overview

This permanent full-time position, based in Hastings/Napier, Hawke's Bay, involves providing essential food safety, animal welfare, and biosecurity verification and certification services at meat export facilities. You will play a vital role in supporting the meat processing industry, ensuring compliance with food safety standards and maintaining New Zealand's reputation in global red meat markets.

Key Responsibilities

• Collaborate effectively with internal colleagues and external partners such as meat processing plant staff and veterinary teams.
• Confirm adherence to established procedures and regulatory requirements within meat plants.
• Perform certification duties for animal meat exports ensuring all standards are met.
• Conduct ante mortem inspections and occasionally provide expert judgment during post-mortem assessments.
• Stay connected with farming communities and participate in on-farm verification activities.
• Ensure consistent maintenance of animal welfare standards.

Training and Support

Comprehensive technical training will be provided initially, followed by ongoing on-site mentoring and support as you become warranted under relevant legislation.

Candidate Profile

• Must be a registered Veterinarian in New Zealand or eligible to gain registration with the Veterinary Council of New Zealand (VCNZ).
• Possess or be capable of obtaining a full New Zealand driver's license.
• Exhibit strong verbal, written, and analytical reasoning abilities.
• Demonstrate personal integrity, ethical conduct, trustworthiness, resilience, adaptability, and openness.
• Have experience in influencing others, teamwork, and skills in planning and organization.
• Be computer literate with proficiency in using both standard and specialized software including word processing, spreadsheets, internet, and email applications.

Knowledge of HACCP or Quality Assurance related to food safety is beneficial but not mandatory, as this will be covered in training.

Team and Work Environment

This role is a part of the Establishment group within MPI Verification Services and reports to the Team Manager for the Hawke's Bay region. The team covers six processing plants and includes 14 veterinarians, either on-site or as relief staff, working in a geographic area spanning Takapau to Gisborne. Collaboration with national teams and managers is expected.

Working shifts involve day and night schedules, especially during peak summer operations, with compensation for overtime, penal time, and shift allowances as applicable.

Salary and Benefits

• Salary range for this role is from NZD 101,627 to NZD 127,033 depending on experience and skills.
